Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, recently spoke before the House Oversight Committee regarding his past association with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. During the hearing, Gates expressed regret for ever meeting Epstein and revealed that the financier had attempted to blackmail him over personal indiscretions in his marriage to Melinda French Gates.

In his statement to lawmakers, Gates opened up about the complexities of his interactions with Epstein. He explained that Epstein had gained knowledge of sensitive information about his private life, including his infidelity. “I learned Epstein had become aware of sensitive information about my personal life, including the fact that I had been unfaithful in my marriage,” Gates shared. He made it clear that these affairs, though painful for himself and his family, had no bearing on his dealings with Epstein.

Gates continued to elaborate on the troubling dynamic, stating, “As the public can now see, based on what has been released in the files, Epstein was working to use information about my infidelities — in addition to many lies that he layered on top — to pressure me to re-engage with him.” He emphasised that Epstein’s attempts to leverage their relationship to further his agenda were unsuccessful. Despite this, Gates maintained that he “never witnessed nor had any indication that Epstein was engaged in ongoing criminal conduct.”

The Microsoft co-founder has not faced any allegations of wrongdoing related to his association with Epstein. He has, however, repeatedly expressed his remorse over their past interactions, asserting that his only motivation for meeting Epstein was to garner support for his philanthropic efforts in global health.
A spokesperson for Gates stated that he “welcomes the opportunity to appear before the Committee,” aiming to assist in their investigation. The enquiry into Epstein’s activities has gained traction, particularly following revelations from documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice. These documents included historical emails sent from Epstein to Gates, in which Epstein claimed that Gates had contracted a sexually transmitted infection from “Russian girls” and had sought assistance in concealing this from his then-wife.
Gates categorically denied these claims, labelling them “completely false.” However, he did acknowledge that he had had two affairs with Russian women during his marriage to French Gates. His honesty during the testimony included an apology to his staff regarding the earlier connections with Epstein, which he described as regrettable but maintained that he had “done nothing illicit.”
In the wake of renewed scrutiny over his ties with Epstein, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced the commissioning of an external review. This review aims to evaluate the Foundation’s past engagement with Epstein and to reassess its current policies regarding new philanthropic partnerships. A report on these findings is anticipated later this summer.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Gates Foundation expressed regret over any interactions its employees may have had with Epstein, acknowledging the profound harm he caused to women and girls. The Foundation continues to focus on its mission to enhance lives both in the UK and globally, assuring the public that its leadership remains actively involved in its ongoing work.
Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. James Comer, has indicated that Gates possesses valuable information pertinent to the investigation. In a letter requesting Gates’s testimony, he pointed to both public reports and documents sourced by the Committee as justification for the inquisition.
As the investigation continues to unfold, Gates’ past connections with Epstein remain under the microscope, reflecting broader questions about accountability and responsibility within philanthropic circles. The testimony marks a significant moment in the ongoing scrutiny of Epstein’s extensive network and the implications for those who had interacted with him.
