Tragedy struck a quinceañera celebration in Mexico over the weekend, resulting in the death of four individuals and the hospitalisation of nearly 40 others after they reportedly consumed adulterated tequila. The festivities took place on Saturday, June 6, in the community of Puerto de Valle, located in Salamanca, Guanajuato.

Among those who lost their lives were José Antonio Cárdenas, the father of the birthday girl, and Martín Robles, her uncle. The victims were part of a traditional quinceañera, a significant cultural event that marks a girl’s transition into adulthood upon turning 15. Local reports, including the Periódico Correo and AM, identified the birthday girl as Jazmín.
The celebrations quickly turned somber when several guests at the party began experiencing severe symptoms after partaking of the alcohol. Initial thoughts from their families pointed towards hangovers, but as the situation worsened, it became apparent that many were unconscious. Symptoms such as vomiting, headaches, and blurred vision were reported among attendees.

Following the incident, a total of 28 guests were treated at the Hospital de la Gente in Salamanca, while eight others sought care at the Mexican Social Security Institute. Additional patients were also admitted to another medical facility nearby. As of June 9, six individuals remained in the hospital, with two teenagers aged 15 and 16 among those affected.

Narciso López, the grandfather of one victim, José Guadalupe Ramblás, recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “They tell me my grandson was asleep and stayed that way all Sunday until they saw he wasn’t waking up.” Tragically, Ramblás did not survive the ordeal after being taken to the hospital. López expressed a desire for justice, stating, “Justice must be served.” He also mentioned that another grandson had been affected but was recovering in hospital.
The local football club, Liga De Fútbol Valtierrilla, extended their condolences via a Facebook post, remembering Ramblás as an enthusiastic young athlete. The community’s shock deepened when friends of another victim, Sanjuana González, shared their concerns upon her absence from her usual tamale sales. “She was very well known here… but on Monday she didn’t show up to sell and then we found out about this,” a friend lamented regarding González’s absence from their local area.
Authorities are currently investigating the source of the tequila consumed at the party. The local government in Salamanca indicated that the matter would fall under the jurisdiction of the Guanajuato State Attorney General’s Office. While investigations continue, further information regarding the case remains limited, with public agencies yet to provide detailed updates.
In the wake of this tragedy, the community and families involved are seeking answers to prevent similar incidents in the future. The tragic circumstances highlight the risks associated with consuming illicit or contaminated alcohol, a problem that has plagued various regions and communities.
As investigations move forward, the affected families are left to deal with the pain of their losses while hoping for accountability and justice in the face of this disaster. Public health authorities are urged to enhance scrutiny on the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages, ensuring regulatory measures are in place to protect citizens from such avoidable tragedies.
