The suspect, 40-year-old Victor M. Rivas, allegedly initiated the 7 June pursuit on Interstate 10 after reports emerged of his Toyota Supra being driven erratically. Eyewitness accounts stated that the vehicle had struck a concrete barrier and was seen with a blown tyre. This prompted the Louisiana State Police Troop B to perform a traffic stop.
Upon interaction with Rivas, the officers reportedly detected signs of impairment. It was during this DWI investigation that Rivas unexpectedly dashed away on foot, leaping from the elevated section of Interstate 310 into a nearby swamp, as detailed in the police press release.

The situation escalated when law enforcement, with assistance from the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, initiated a search for Rivas. Their efforts were fruitful as he was later spotted walking along U.S. Highway 61. However, the chase continued when Rivas fled once more, this time plunging into the murky waters of the swamp.
Tragically for Rivas, it was here that he was met with a lurking alligator, which attacked him, causing injuries to both of his arms. Despite the injuries, he attempted to continue his escape, but he was eventually located and apprehended using drone technology deployed by the officers.
Following his capture, Rivas was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Reports indicate that he is now facing a range of charges, including operating a vehicle while impaired, resisting an officer, hit-and-run, and careless operation. These developments have raised concerns among law enforcement regarding the dangers of impaired driving.
In a statement underscoring the severity of such actions, Louisiana State Police urged motorists to exercise caution when behind the wheel. “Impaired driving can lead to serious and unpredictable consequences. Motorists are urged to make responsible decisions, plan ahead, and always designate a sober driver,” the statement read.
The agency expressed appreciation for the collaboration with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office, highlighting the effectiveness of their partnership in resolving the incident. This cooperation was instrumental in bringing the pursuit to a close, and the use of drone technology showcased an innovative approach to locating individuals in challenging scenarios.
Rivas’s case serves as a stark reminder of the potentially dire outcomes associated with reckless behaviour on the roads. The message from law enforcement is clear: prioritising safety and making informed decisions can prevent not only legal repercussions but also life-threatening situations, as demonstrated by this extraordinary encounter.
As investigations continue, updates on Rivas’s situation are likely to emerge. Meanwhile, this incident has prompted discussions on the importance of responsible driving practices and the need for officers to remain vigilant in their efforts to combat impaired driving. Motorists in Louisiana and beyond are reminded to heed these warnings for their safety and that of others on the road.
