As the Carolina Hurricanes embark on their Stanley Cup Final journey against the Vegas Golden Knights, the wives and girlfriends of the players, commonly referred to as WAGs, are adding a unique flair to their support through custom-designed jackets. Leading the initiative for the Hurricanes’ WAGs is Gina Gostisbehere, whose husband, Shayne Gostisbehere, plays as a defence man for the team. In an exclusive interview, Gina provided insights into the creative process behind the jackets and their significance throughout the playoffs.

This year, a custom jacket tradition has emerged among all 16 teams competing in the Stanley Cup playoffs, with the WAGs rallying together to design bespoke pieces for their partners’ games. The jackets have rapidly gained attention on social media, where the ladies are proudly showcasing their unique styles. For the Hurricanes, Gina has worked diligently to infuse a modern aesthetic into their jackets, steering away from the team’s traditional red and black colours.

“In the initial stages, we aimed to create a more elevated sportswear look,” Gina remarked. “I envisioned a blend of different fabrics and a monochromatic theme for the jacket’s back.” Following the conception of a mood board showcasing various styles and materials, Gina collaborated with Sports Club Atelier to finalise their design. “After discussing our ideas, they presented three unique options. The moment we saw the first design, we all adored it,” she shared.
A departure from the classic colour scheme, the Hurricanes’ jacket features a sophisticated burgundy adorned with subtle embroidery of players’ names on the back. Gina highlighted that the colour was not solely an aesthetic choice but also influenced by hockey’s notorious superstitions. “The Hurricanes have enjoyed playoff success for the last eight years, during which time, red jackets have been a staple. This year, we agreed that a change was in order. Burgundy felt fresh and distinguished,” she explained. “With many of the girls being a bit superstitious, we believed this new hue could potentially enhance our luck.”
Indeed, the choice appears to have been fortuitous, as the Hurricanes are competing in the Stanley Cup final for the first time in two decades, having previously lifted the trophy in 2006. “Hockey is permeated with superstition, and many of us feel that these jackets have transformed into our good luck charms during this playoff journey,” Gina commented, revealing that the women brought their jackets with them to support the team during their away games in Las Vegas.
Watching her husband on the ice during this pivotal season has been a deeply meaningful experience for Gina and her family. “This season holds immense significance for our family. Shayne has devoted his life to reaching moments like this, and witnessing all his hard work, as well as that of his teammates, come to fruition is incredibly rewarding,” she reflected.
Gina emphasised the importance of family support, which has made this playoff season particularly special. “It’s heartwarming to see our one-year-old son Dax taking part in this journey,” she said. “The friendships we’ve formed during this time and the memories we’ve created will undoubtedly last a lifetime.” The camaraderie within the WAG group has enhanced the overall experience for everyone involved as they navigate the highs and lows of the playoff run together.
“Sharing these unforgettable moments with Shayne while he performs in front of our son is a priceless experience,” Gina added, noting the emotional depth of her family’s involvement in the sport. “While the action on the ice brings excitement, the joy of experiencing it as a family is the ultimate dream come true.”
As the Stanley Cup final continues, the custom jackets worn by the Hurricanes’ WAGs add a stylish and meaningful touch to the support that these women are providing to their partners. With Gina at the helm of this creative venture, it is evident that fashion and superstition have produced a delightful combination during this remarkable season for the Hurricanes.
