On that fateful evening, around 20 individuals aboard four boats convened near the intersection of Linden and Delaware avenues in Northeast Philadelphia before launching their vessels into the water, as detailed by Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. Witnesses reported that Gil-Reyes jumped into the river for a swim but, unfortunately, did not manage to make it back to the boat.
A close friend of Gil-Reyes, Argeni Infante Reyes, recounted his last words, stating, “He swam out of the boat with my other friend, and the last thing he told my friend was, ‘Hey, I can’t no more. I love you.'” This sorrowful exchange highlights the distressing moment as it became evident that Gil-Reyes was struggling in the water.

Following a mayday call, emergency services, including the Coast Guard, initiated an extensive search operation that lasted approximately 11 hours on the night of June 5. Tragically, while one friend was rescued from the river, Gil-Reyes was not located until three days later.
On June 8, around 12:59 p.m., New Jersey State Police received reports of a deceased male washed ashore in Palmyra Township, Burlington County. Upon investigation, authorities confirmed that the body matched the description of Gil-Reyes, providing a somber conclusion to the search efforts that had gripped the local community.
Gil-Reyes had been living in New York City and worked as a barber at Team W Barbershop in Philadelphia. Colleagues described him as a devoted father to two young daughters and a beloved member of the community. The news of his untimely passing has deeply affected those who knew him, evoking a mix of mourning and shock.
Officials from the New Jersey State Police stated that an investigation into the incident is currently ongoing. However, no additional information has been released at this time. The community remains concerned for the family of Gil-Reyes as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.
The situation has raised awareness around water safety, particularly in instances where individuals engage in swimming after dark. Though it is common for groups to enjoy river and lake outings during the warmer months, accidents can occur, reminding everyone of the importance of caution when venturing into open waters.
As friends and family continue to mourn the loss of Carlos Gil-Reyes, his story serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictability of water activities and the potential risks involved. The heartfelt tributes and memories shared by those who loved him speak to a life tragically cut short, leaving behind a legacy of love and fond memories.
