A tragic incident has unfolded following a wedding celebration in Georgia, where newlywed couple Jesni and Dave Fiji were involved in a helicopter crash shortly after their reception. The disaster, which claimed the life of 25-year-old Dave Fiji, took place on May 29, when the couple boarded a Robinson R66 helicopter for a supposed romantic getaway.

The couple had been married just hours earlier in a ceremony attended by hundreds of friends and family at The Revere venue in Dawsonville. Emergency responders were alerted to the crash site around 10:35 pm, after the helicopter went down in a wooded area. Jesni, despite sustaining serious injuries including extensive cuts and bruises, managed to survive, while the pilot, identified as Nikhil Nargundkar, and Dave were pronounced dead at the scene.

In the days that followed, Jesni’s world turned from celebration to mourning, culminating in Dave’s funeral on June 6. Surrounded by loved ones, she reflected on their relationship and the future they had dreamed of sharing together. Dressed in black, Jesni spoke at the podium, sharing heartfelt memories of her husband. “I saved recipes I thought he would like and daydreamed about our future together,” she expressed, emphasising her deep love and trust in Dave.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, especially given that the weather conditions were reportedly foggy at the time of takeoff. Jesni’s father-in-law, George Fiji, relayed that Dave had a deep understanding of flying and had raised concerns about the visibility, which left family members questioning the decision to proceed with the flight.
George recounted that shortly before the crash, his son mentioned he would not have flown under such conditions, raising alarm that the pilot chose to ascend higher despite the poor visibility. Tragically, the helicopter soon veered off course, crashing into the trees southwest of Dawsonville.
Following the crash, Jesni was trapped under the wreckage for an extended period before being located and rescued. George reported that she awoke to find herself pinned beneath debris and discovered Dave’s lifeless body on her chest. A trained nurse, Jesni understood the gravity of the situation but fought through her despair.
Once rescued, she was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Centre for treatment of her injuries. This harrowing incident has left not only Jesni but also their families grappling with the loss of a young life filled with promise. In a public statement, George labelled Dave “a gift from God,” cherishing the joy he brought into their lives.
The helicopter involved belonged to Prestige Helicopters, a company known for providing chartered flights for weddings in the Atlanta area. As details of the accident emerge, the NTSB continues to document the scene with support from the local sheriff’s office and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In an official statement, the NTSB indicated that the initial findings showed the helicopter struck tall trees, which resulted in a devastating impact with the ground.
The tragic crash has highlighted the unpredictable nature of aviation and the risks involved. As the investigation unfolds, family and friends of the couple are left to navigate their grief while remembering the love and joy Dave brought into their lives, alongside the bittersweet memories Jesni will carry forward.
This heart-wrenching story serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the unexpected turns it can take, revealing the profound impacts of love, loss, and resilience in the face of tragedy.
