This adaptation follows the success of another of Henry’s books, *People We Meet on Vacation*, which premiered on Netflix in January 2026. With *Beach Read* being a fan-favourite since its publication in May 2020, expectations are high for how this story will transition to the big screen.

At the helm of the film is director Yulin Kuang, who also co-wrote the screenplay for *People We Meet on Vacation*. Celebrating the start of filming, Kuang shared an engaging behind-the-scenes photo via Instagram, featuring a camera test from the set. In her post, she expressed excitement about the project, saying, “a crumb of bts from the BEACH READ camera test for you, dear reader 🐥 can’t wait to show what we’ve been cooking up ⏲️👩🍳.”

The image presented Dynevor in character as January Andrews, showcasing her new short red bob. Dressed in a white tank top layered with a cheerful yellow knit cardigan and accessorised with a gold locket, she appeared contemplative yet charming. Standing beside her, Schwarzenegger, who portrays Augustus “Gus” Everett, sported tousled longer hair and was dressed casually in a navy tank top and short-sleeve button-down.
*Beach Read* tells the story of two rival authors, January and Gus, who are both struggling with writer’s block. Their paths converge when they spend a summer in adjacent beach houses, prompting an unexpected bet that transforms the dynamics of their relationship. Gus must write a happy romance, while January is challenged to craft a serious literary work. This premise not only sets the stage for a fierce competition but also a witty and poignant exploration of their views on love and happiness.
Dynevor was officially announced as January Andrews in February 2026, while Schwarzenegger’s casting as Gus Everett was confirmed in April 2026, generating excitement among fans of the novel. The chemistry between the two leads is keenly anticipated, with many hopeful for how their interpretation of the characters will resonate on screen.
In a collaborative announcement shared by Kuang, 20th Century Studios, and Dynevor, it was confirmed that filming is now underway. They concluded the post with the date for the film’s theatrical release — anticipated for May 7, 2027, generating further buzz around the project.
Aside from Dynevor and Schwarzenegger, the film boasts a notable supporting cast, including Kevin Bacon, Andie MacDowell, Tig Notaro, and Kristin Davis, although their specific roles are yet to be revealed. The inclusion of such experienced actors promises to enrich the film’s narrative and character depth.
Fans of Emily Henry’s work and newcomers to the romance genre alike are closely following the development of this adaptation. With a creative team that has previously succeeded in bringing Henry’s storytelling to life, there is a palpable sense of optimism regarding the film. As production moves forward, the anticipation builds, with many eager to see how the themes of love, creativity, and rivalry will be portrayed on screen.
As the film progresses, further insights into the casting choices and story developments are likely to emerge, keeping audiences engaged until its release. The combination of a beloved source material, a talented cast, and a skilled director sets the stage for what many hope will be a delightful cinematic experience.
