A tragic incident in Florida has resulted in the death of Walter Bowers III, a 34-year-old father, following a cooking fire in his apartment that left two of his young children in critical condition. The harrowing event occurred on 30 May at the Pine Ridge Apartments in Gulf County. Fire and police officials responded to the emergency call, but the situation proved dire.

When responders arrived, they were met with thick smoke permeating the apartment. The conditions inside were described as perilous, with “floor-to-ceiling smoke” limiting visibility entirely. Initial efforts focused on rescuing the two children, aged approximately five and ten, who were located near the rear door. One was barely breathing and required immediate first aid after being brought outside. Emergency personnel then bravely re-entered the smoke-filled residence to locate Bowers, who was discovered alongside his children.

After being rescued, the father and his children were transported to local hospitals, where they were treated for smoke inhalation. Reports indicate that the children were in a critical but stable condition. A day later, on 31 May, officials provided an uplifting update, noting that both children were recovering well, awake, and even playing in their hospital rooms. Tragically, however, Walter Bowers succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on 1 June.
In an emotional statement shared by police, Bowers’ family expressed their heartache following his untimely passing. They fondly remembered him, referring to him as “Boug,” and described him as a cherished son, father, brother, and friend, whose presence impacted many lives. The family called upon the community for support as they navigated this profound loss, specifically asking for prayers for Bowers’ children.
Investigations into the fire suggest it was ignited by a pot of oil that Bowers had left unattended on the stove while preparing to cook wings. It’s believed that he fell asleep, ultimately leading to the tragic incident. Port St. Joe Police Chief Jake Richards confirmed the circumstances surrounding the blaze during a statement to local media.
Bowers’ mother, Tammy, reflected on the bittersweet nature of the situation. While grieving her son, she found solace in the fact that her grandchildren had survived the ordeal. “My son did unfortunately pass away, but my two grandchildren — who were also involved in this tragedy — on the bright side are healthy and happy,” she shared.
The sorrow of Bowers’ passing has resonated throughout the community, with several first responders on the scene being high school classmates of the victim. Officer Caleb Kesterson, who attended school with Bowers, conveyed the heavy weight of the incident, recalling fond memories from their school days. “It’s hard ’cause I look back and think about how we used to sit next to each other in high school. It’s a heavy hit,” he stated.
In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, a GoFundMe page has been launched to aid Bowers’ family during this challenging time. The aim is to provide support for the children and assist with any immediate needs as they come to terms with their father’s death.
Community members have united in their efforts, expressing their condolences and offering financial assistance. Bowers was known to many as a “class clown” with a generous spirit, highlighting the profound impact he had on those around him. His friends and family are left to mourn not only the loss of a beloved individual but also to support his children as they begin to heal from this tragic ordeal.
