A Wisconsin couple, Haley and Justin Sullivan, have shared their deeply personal journey following the premature birth of their daughter, Ellie, who arrived three months early and spent an extended period in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The Sullivans, who characterised their daughter as a “go-getter”, have used their experience to advocate for awareness of premature births and NICU challenges.

Ellie was born weighing just 2 lbs., 1 oz. Her early arrival was necessitated by concerns from her medical team regarding insufficient oxygen and nutrients during the pregnancy. Over the course of more than three months, Ellie received intensive medical care in the NICU, a time filled with uncertainty and challenges for her parents.

During Ellie’s stay in the NICU, the Sullivans sought solace in a creative yet poignant way by creating a string of colourful beads. Each bead represents one day spent in the NICU, effectively transforming their difficult journey into a tangible tribute reflecting milestones and medical procedures. The beads now serve as a powerful reminder of both the trials they faced and the progress they witnessed.

After a prolonged NICU stay, Ellie has now returned home, and her parents are cherishing every moment with their daughter. Haley expressed her joy in recent statements, sharing that Ellie is surpassing expectations. “She is keeping up with milestones,” Haley explained to a local news outlet, WBAY. “In the NICU, she has an adjusted age and an unadjusted age, so she’s keeping up with her unadjusted age, which is pretty phenomenal. She’s going to be walking any day now.”
The Sullivans have wholeheartedly embraced their new role as the Ambassador Family for the 2026 March for Babies campaign. Through this platform, they aim to share Ellie’s story, offering encouragement and solidarity to families enduring similar experiences in the NICU. Their hope is to illuminate the path for others, reminding them that they are not alone in their struggles.
The March for Babies event took place in Fox Valley on June 7, marking its return for the first time since 2019. This annual walk is integral in raising funds and supporting the March of Dimes’ mission to advance research and provide educational resources for families impacted by premature birth and pregnancy complications.
Families like the Sullivans are also rallying community support through fundraising initiatives. Those wishing to contribute to their cause can make donations to help further the efforts of the March of Dimes. The Sullivan family’s journey highlights not only the challenges associated with prematurity but also the resilience of both the children affected and their families.
As they continue on their journey, the Sullivans remain optimistic about Ellie’s future. They are determined to advocate for others and raise awareness around the critical issues surrounding premature births. Their story serves as an inspiration to many and reinforces the importance of community support during challenging times.
Overall, the Sullivans hope their experience can foster a greater understanding of the realities of premature birth, helping to pave the way for more research, resources, and ultimately better outcomes for families facing similar situations.
