During a recent photography session in Yosemite National Park, a couple’s romantic elopement was famously interrupted by a wild black bear. Stephen and Kelly Joseph, who had privately wed the previous year, took advantage of a special opportunity to capture their memories in the picturesque Californian park on May 21.

The couple, both in their thirties, ventured into the stunning landscapes of Yosemite wearing their wedding attire, aiming to create adventurous memories. Daring poses along the edge of a breathtaking cliff were part of their photo shoot, but it was a surprise encounter with wildlife that turned out to be the most remarkable moment of their day.
As the couple trekked along a trail to a scenic sunset location, their photographer, Ariel Smartt, informed them of a bear sighting nearby. Initially, the news was met with laughter from Kelly and Stephen; however, reality quickly set in as the bear—a foraging creature that was ultimately given the nickname “Cinnamon” by Smartt—appeared close behind them on the trail.
“It is such a magical place,” Kelly remarked in an interview after the incident. The trio had been pausing along the trail to optimise the natural lighting when the unexpected encounter unfolded.
Despite the bear’s presence being potentially alarming, the couple and their photographer chose to remain calm. “It was intimidating, but we never felt like there was any real danger,” Kelly explained. The bear was seemingly uninterested in their presence, engrossed in foraging on downed trees. The bear remained nearby for five to ten minutes, allowing the couple to continue their shoot as planned.
Smartt described the event on her Instagram, highlighting it as “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to catch a rare moment with such a majestic animal. The photographer adeptly seized the chance to take photos of the couple with the bear in the background, turning an unplanned situation into a memorable occasion.
“The day was incredible from start to finish,” Kelly reflected. “The bear encounter absolutely made the day more special. Standing on the edge of a cliff with a 3,000-foot sheer drop was much more intimidating than the bear, to be honest.”
Yosemite National Park is known to house between 300 to 500 black bears, as stated by the National Park Service. Interestingly, many of these bears are brown in colour, contradicting their name. The average adult male black bear typically weighs around 113 kg (250 lbs), while an adult female averages about 68 kg (150 lbs).
Visitors to the park are encouraged to maintain a safe distance from bears to ensure both their safety and that of the wildlife. Thankfully, bear attacks are exceedingly rare, and there have been no reported fatal incidents or serious injuries caused by bears in Yosemite.
The couple’s story serves as a reminder of the beauty and unpredictability of nature, where even the most cherished moments can be enhanced by unforeseen events. This unique encounter not only added an extraordinary element to their wedding photography but also highlighted the importance of respecting wildlife during outdoor adventures.
