In a remarkable display of resilience and determination, Fox News correspondent Benjamin Hall successfully completed the Tunnel to Towers climb, scaling all 104 stories of One World Trade Center on Sunday, June 7. This striking achievement comes after Hall faced life-altering injuries during a 2022 missile attack while reporting on the conflict in Ukraine. He undertook this grueling challenge not only to demonstrate his own strength but also to honour the sacrifices of others.

Hall, a 43-year-old British-American journalist, is renowned for his tenacity. He lost a leg and a foot in the attack, and his recovery journey has been arduous, involving months of rehabilitation. As he reached the top of the iconic skyscraper, he reflected on the magnitude of his journey, expressing gratitude for his ability to participate in such an event, stating, “How lucky are we to be here?”

The Tunnel to Towers climb is an annual event held to honour the courage of 9/11 responders, particularly firefighter Stephen Siller, who laid down his life during the terrorist attacks. The event accommodates around 1,250 climbers who ascend to One World Observatory, offering breathtaking views of the city and the two reflecting pools marking the Twin Towers’ former locations. Hall’s participation serves as a poignant reminder of resilience in the face of adversity.
In preparation for the climb, Hall raised substantial funds for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which provides mortgage-free homes and other forms of housing assistance to veterans and the families of first responders who have made the ultimate sacrifice. His resolve to support the foundation stems from personal experience; he understands the challenges faced by families affected by such tragedies.
Speaking to PEOPLE, Hall recounted his emotional journey, sharing, “At the top, I became a little emotional thinking about where this journey began.” He vividly recalled lying seriously injured on a military aircraft after the attack, contemplating the immense struggle he endured to recovery, and the support he received from medical professionals like Dr. Joe Alderete, who climbed alongside him that day.
Describing the ascent, Hall noted that although the climb became more physically demanding around the 80th floor, he never wavered mentally. He attributed his perseverance to the mission of the event and the memory of the heroes it honours, stating, “Thinking of the 9/11 first responders made what I was doing feel like the easiest thing in the world.”
Hall’s family, including his wife Alicia and their four daughters, supported his quest. Challenges faced by Hall and his family during his recuperation were significant; the decision for Hall to seek treatment in Texas while his family remained in London could not have been easy. However, Alicia remarked on their journey, emphasising that self-pity was not an option when so many others experienced greater hardships.
Hall views his successful trek to the top of One World Trade Center as a potent message to anyone facing obstacles, asserting that no setback should deter one from pursuing ambitions and dreams. “I may be injured, I may be on prosthetics, but there is still nothing I can’t try to do,” he asserted, highlighting the resilience that can be found in adversity.
In a time when communities often seem divided, Hall believes events like the Tunnel to Towers climb demonstrate an enduring spirit of solidarity. “At the heart of this country, people still come together and help each other,” he commented, expressing a desire to teach his daughters the importance of community and service.
Reflecting on his journey, Hall articulated a profound sense of victory over his past. Once fearful about his limitations following the injury, he has now reclaimed his sense of agency. “I love a challenge,” said Hall, as he embraced not only his own personal journey but the powerful message it represents for others struggling with their own difficulties.
As he stood atop one of the world’s tallest buildings, Hall’s triumph is not merely about reaching new heights, but about lifting spirits and inspiring a collective resilience in the face of adversity. His journey conveys a significant narrative that underscores the importance of hope, perseverance, and the enduring human spirit.
