A Washington, D.C. resident has sparked a movement this summer, encouraging people to venture beyond their comfort zones and earn ‘patches’ through various activities. Indie, known online as AsToldByIndie, recently shared her innovative concept called “Patch Summer” via TikTok, which rapidly gained popularity and inspired individuals to undertake fun and budget-friendly pursuits with friends.

Indie, who is not a former Girl Scout, conceived the idea while contemplating enjoyable summer activities with her pals. “I wanted to create something that encouraged us to try new experiences,” she explained. Scouring for a source to purchase patches similar to those earned by Girl Scouts, she stumbled upon Snappy Logos, a site offering patches that can be attained through a variety of activities.
“I found patches that corresponded with actual activities we could enjoy together,” she noted. After acquiring a selection of patches, she approached her friends with the idea. “I told them, ‘If I buy these patches, will you join me for some activities?’ They only cost a few cents each, which made it easy to start,” Indie added.

Following up on this creative venture, Indie produced a video explaining the mechanics of “Patch Summer.” She emphasised that participants can choose any patches that intrigue them or activities they wish to engage in, stating, “The aim is not to spend excessively but to foster community, participation, and goal-setting.” Since her video was posted, it has attracted nearly a million views and generated significant interest among viewers.
“I genuinely didn’t expect the TikTok to resonate so much or translate to actual patch sales,” the 29-year-old shared. She expressed amazement at how many people embraced the trend, with many posting their own adventures as they begin to receive their patches. “I’ve seen comments suggesting the creation of a Discord channel for virtual groups; I’m open to whatever direction followers decide to take with this concept,” she said.

Indie acknowledged her surprise at the motivating impact of her initiative and why it has struck a chord with many. She reflected, “There seems to be a desire for togetherness and participation. Given the rising costs of living, engaging in low-cost activities like a picnic in the park becomes appealing.” The enthusiastic response to her concept has left her elated, especially as she realised it had become something others had longed for.
In her own words, “This was a whimsical idea I proposed to my friends, but it’s turned into something that many people felt was precisely what they needed.” She also mentioned the positive nature of the online response, stating, “The internet can be tough, but this has generated a wave of support without any negativity.”
To take her initiative further, Indie recommended that participants create a tangible way to cherish their experiences. She suggested purchasing a simple canvas tote bag to collect patches, which can be affixed after completing each activity. “I envision this bag serving as a memory blanket of my summer, capturing the events I enjoyed,” she described, referring to it as a form of a personal scrapbook.
For those keen on embracing “Patch Summer,” Indie advises newcomers to start with manageable goals. “Firstly, select patches aligned with your existing aspirations, such as learning a new skill or exploring the outdoors,” she advised. Indie believes that engaging in pre-existing interests makes the effort feel more rewarding.
She is also working with the patch company to curate themed packs, which will feature collections aimed at specific activities such as cooking or outdoor exploration. “This initiative is about encouraging fresh experiences,” she explained, emphasising the importance of stepping out of one’s routine.
“I love seeing the diversity in participants; people from various backgrounds have taken this idea and made it their own,” Indie shared. Be it grandparents exploring with their grandchildren or empty nesters seeking new experiences, the community has come together in surprising ways. She encouraged others not to hold back: “If you are intrigued, dive in. It easily adapts to various lifestyles—just take the plunge.”
Ultimately, Indie’s “Patch Summer” serves as a reminder that memorable experiences don’t have to be extravagant; it’s about fostering connections and creating lasting memories through simple adventures. As more individuals take part, the movement continues to grow, spotlighting the joy of exploring new activities alongside others.
