A four-year-old boy was taken to hospital after consuming a THC lollipop that he received in a birthday party goodie bag at his Montessori school in Austin, Texas. His mother, Savannah Mallach, shared her distressing experience, highlighting the severity of her son’s condition following the incident.

Mallach recounted her son’s alarming symptoms, which included hallucinations and a significantly increased heart rate. “It was awful,” she told CBS Austin, explaining that her son appeared disoriented and lethargic immediately after eating the candy. “He looked high. He’s 4 years old, and I was thinking in my head, ‘Why do you look high?’”

Upon inspecting the wrapper of the lollipop, Mallach confirmed her suspicions that her son had ingested THC, a psychoactive compound found in cannabis. She promptly alerted the school in an effort to prevent further incidents involving other children.

“He was so unwell. I could feel his heart racing just by placing my hand on his chest,” she remembered, noting how medical staff administered an IV to her son once they arrived at the hospital. “He wasn’t himself. He would wake up and say things that didn’t make sense; he was hallucinating.” The distressing experience left Mallach feeling that her lively child had suddenly become an unrecognisable version of himself.
Despite her immediate notification to the school about her son’s condition, Mallach was disappointed to find that the school staff reportedly took almost two days to inform other parents about the incident through a vague message on a communication app. Given that her son’s class contained over 20 children, Mallach questioned the delay in communication. “It could have been all those kids, and the school chose not to reach out to them for almost two days,” she remarked, expressing her frustration at the lack of urgency.
Following the incident, Mallach decided to withdraw her child from the school, joining a group of frustrated parents who also felt compelled to leave. “There was a significant miscommunication because there was none,” she added, criticising the school for failing to apologise for the troubling event. “Parents are angry because they could have had that in their bag all week.”
Although her son has since recovered and is doing significantly better, Mallach has found a new school that she believes will provide a more suitable environment for her family. She expressed her hope that other families do not have to endure a similar ordeal, urging the school to improve its procedures and take accountability for the incident. “My message to the school is to do better in the future and own up to any mistakes that have been made,” she stated.
The Austin Police Department provided a statement indicating that their investigation did not reveal evidence of a deliberate act, suggesting that the THC lollipop was likely included in the goodie bag unintentionally. As a result, the case was closed with no further investigations by the Child Abuse Unit.
Local authorities and school officials confirmed that the incident took place at The Nest at Anderson Mill. The school’s CEO, Shavonda Lawson, articulated their commitment to improving safety measures in the wake of the incident. “In the days since, we have spent time listening to families, reviewing procedures, evaluating our systems, and identifying additional safeguards to strengthen our programme moving forward,” Lawson stated. “We believe that trust is built through accountability, transparency, and action.”
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is continuing to investigate the situation, while parents at the school are left grappling with the implications of such an alarming event. The community is now facing the pressing question of how to ensure the safety and well-being of children in school environments, particularly in light of incidents involving edible cannabis products.
As families navigate the aftermath of this unfortunate situation, the focus remains on fostering a safer educational atmosphere and preventing any repetition of incidents that could lead to harm. Further comments regarding the incident are anticipated from both the Austin Police Department and The Nest at Anderson Mill as the investigation progresses.
