The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall of specific baby wipes sold exclusively at Target after the discovery of potentially harmful bacteria. The affected products include Up & Up Fragrance Free and Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes. The announcement was made on Friday, 5 June.

This recall was prompted by customer complaints regarding the wipes, with reports of unusual discolouration leading to an FDA investigation. The subsequent analysis revealed the presence of Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli bacteria in the wipes. These microorganisms are particularly concerning as they are known to cause serious infections and may lead to conditions such as sepsis.
Federal regulators have highlighted that Burkholderia cepacia and Burkholderia gladioli can be resistant to certain antibiotics, complicating treatment efforts. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that these bacteria pose a heightened risk to young children with underdeveloped immune systems, as well as to individuals with compromised immunity.
The recalled wipes were sold in various packaging options: the Up & Up Fragrance Free variety is available in pouches containing 20, 72, or 100 wipes, while the Fresh Cucumber Scented version comes in pouches containing either 72 or 100 wipes. Customers are advised to check the expiration dates, which range from 10 May to 5 November 2028 for the Fragrance Free wipes and 29 June to 30 June 2028 for the Fresh Cucumber Scented wipes.
Target has encouraged customers who purchased these affected wipes to cease their use immediately and return them to any Target store for a full refund. The retail giant has stated a commitment to product safety and consumer well-being, emphasising that they take such issues very seriously.
It is particularly concerning that infections caused by the Burkholderia bacteria can escalate quickly, potentially spreading into the bloodstream and leading to severe health outcomes, including sepsis or pneumonia. Parents and caregivers have been urged to be vigilant about the health risks associated with the contaminated wipes, especially those caring for very young children.
In response to the recall, the FDA has provided guidelines for consumers who may have inadvertently purchased the wipes. They recommend actively checking the packaging details and returning the products as soon as possible for a refund.
Additionally, experts recommend that families remain informed about the products they use for children’s personal care. It is essential to follow any guidance from health officials and manufacturers regarding recalls to avoid potential health risks.
As the recall process unfolds, the FDA continues to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that measures are taken to protect the public from potential harm. Those who wish to stay updated on such health notifications may consider subscribing to relevant newsletters to receive timely information.
