Tennis star Alexander Zverev and his former partner Brenda Patea welcomed their daughter, Mayla Zverev, into the world in March 2021. The couple’s relationship, which began in 2019, ended the following year amid a backdrop of controversy and allegations.

Brenda Patea announced her pregnancy in October 2020, shortly after the pair had split. Despite their breakup, she expressed her joy and apprehension about becoming a mother. “This is my magical beginning with a new life growing beneath my heart,” she shared in a heartfelt Instagram post, reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster of impending motherhood.

Zverev, an Olympic gold medallist, confirmed he was the father of Mayla in an interview shortly after Patea’s announcement. He expressed a commitment to fatherhood, saying that he and Patea would work together to support their child, despite no longer being a couple. “We have a good relationship, and I will live up to my responsibility as a father,” he stated.
However, the couple’s dynamic was marred by serious allegations. In October 2021, Patea accused Zverev of domestic abuse during an incident that reportedly occurred in May 2020. She claimed he pushed her against a wall and choked her during an argument at their shared apartment in Berlin. Zverev has consistently denied these allegations.
In June 2024, an out-of-court settlement was reached, with Zverev reportedly agreeing to pay Patea €200,000. Following this legal resolution, Zverev and Patea established joint custody of their daughter, according to reports from the Associated Press. Moreover, Zverev has committed himself to providing child support, facilitating a more stable environment for Mayla.
Mayla’s birth was celebrated by Patea, who shared a touching post on social media about the arrival of her daughter. She described the experience of motherhood as a blend of beauty and challenges, emphasising the often-overlooked realities of postpartum life. “Every birth is different, and you can never know beforehand exactly how you’ll feel afterward,” she conveyed, recognising the emotional complexities that accompany bringing a child into the world.
Initially, Patea had expressed reluctance towards sharing custody with Zverev, believing that she could provide a nurturing environment independently. However, the court ruling stipulated that both parents would have a role in Mayla’s upbringing. Judge Barbara Lüders highlighted the need for a forward-looking approach regarding their joint custody arrangement.
Maintaining a low profile for their daughter appears to be a priority for Zverev. He has previously stated his desire for Mayla to grow up outside the limelight. “I want her to be a normal child, growing up with a normal life,” he remarked, stressing the importance of shielding her from the pressures of social media and public attention.
While Zverev seeks to provide a sense of normalcy for Mayla, there are glimpses of her involvement in his life as a professional athlete. For instance, the young girl occasionally attends matches, watching her father compete from less visible areas of the stadium, away from the prying eyes of fans and media alike.
As Zverev works to balance his tennis career—culminating in significant tournaments like the French Open and the Australian Open—with his responsibilities as a father, the relationship dynamics with Patea remain an evolving narrative in the public eye. As the couple navigates co-parenting in the wake of their tumultuous history, the focus remains on providing Mayla with the upbringing she deserves, amidst the challenges inherent in their past.
