The Tribeca Film Festival is set to showcase ‘The Leader’, an intriguing new film from writer-director Michael Gallagher, on June 5. The film delves into the haunting narrative of Heaven’s Gate, an infamous cult that has marked its place in US history.

In a striking performance, Vera Farmiga, known for her Academy Award-nominated roles, portrays Bonnie Lu Nettles, one of the cult’s co-founders. Farmiga’s fascination with Nettles began during the pandemic while she viewed an HBO documentary titled “Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults.” This documentary uncovers the unsettling events surrounding one of the largest mass suicides in American history.
Reflecting on her attraction to the character, Farmiga stated, “I fell straight into Bonnie Lu’s gravitational field. She just cast a spell on me with her eyes.” Her captivating gaze, according to Farmiga, is one of Nettles’ significant attributes, compelling those around her to feel an urge to confess even their uncommitted wrongs.
Farmiga’s interest in the character evolved into an obsession, prompting her to instruct her management to search for scripts about Heaven’s Gate. After nearly six years of pursuit, she eventually connected with Gallagher’s project.
In discussing her affinity for characters like Nettles, Farmiga remarked, “Maybe I’m just destined to play people who have strong opinions.” She finds a common thread between Nettles and her well-known role as paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren in *The Conjuring* series. “Some actors get detectives, I get mystics,” she humourously noted, suggesting that she feels drawn to portrayals of spiritual authority.
The actress expressed her inclination towards narratives that recognise the complexity of humans as spiritual entities, alongside their emotional and psychological facets. She explained, “Stories that explore the spiritual dimensions of characters are rare. Most stories focus on external conflict or psychology and fewer ask deeper questions about their purpose or belief.”
Farmiga acknowledges the complexities involved in presenting a figure as polarising as Nettles. “It’s my job not to paint her as a villain,” she clarified. While Nettles guided followers toward tragic outcomes, Farmiga endeavours to delve deeply into her beliefs and the consequences of unwavering devotion.
At her core, Farmiga views Nettles as a seeker of meaning. The actress elaborated on Nettles’ transformation from a grounded nurse in Texas to a devout prophet, suggesting it wasn’t borne out of ego but rather a profound need to find significance. “She was a grounded human being, a wife, a mother, and a caregiver. I don’t think it was out of vanity but rather a desperate need to matter,” Farmiga emphasised.
In her preparation for the role, Farmiga aimed to embody Nettles’ stillness. Describing her approach, she remarked, “The quieter she is, the more power she seems to have.” Farmiga noted that the documentary revealed how Nettles emanated certainty, stating that she didn’t have to convince anyone of her beliefs.
Alongside Farmiga, the film features Tim Blake Nelson as Marshall Herff Applewhite, fellow co-founder of Heaven’s Gate. As they examine the intertwined lives and radical beliefs of these two figures, ‘The Leader’ promises to offer a compelling exploration of faith, purpose, and the human condition.
The film’s world premiere at the Tribeca Festival gives audiences a chance to witness this thought-provoking presentation of a dark chapter in history, through the lenses of conviction, delusion, and the quest for meaning.
With anticipation building for its release, *The Leader* stands as a testament to the captivating themes of belief and spirituality, elements that resonate long after viewing. As viewers prepare to immerse themselves in this reflection on a cult’s influence, the performance of Vera Farmiga is undoubtedly set to be a highlight.
