Katie O’Connell, the principal of Trout Creek Academy in St. Johns County, Florida, has been placed on administrative leave following the inclusion of a lyric from Fetty Wap’s song “Trap Queen” in the school’s yearbook. The line, attributed to her, reads, “Everybody hating, we just call them fans though! – Mrs. O’Connell.” This incident has ignited a considerable amount of controversy within the school community.

O’Connell, who has held her position for two years, discovered the lyric attributed to her after receiving screenshots of the yearbook page via Facebook days before the scheduled distribution of the books. Initially surprised, she did not consider the issue a priority amid her numerous other responsibilities at the school. Ultimately, however, the books were distributed four days earlier than planned, leaving O’Connell no time to address the error before it became public.
In a statement to PEOPLE, O’Connell maintains that she did not write or authorise the use of the quote. She reported that the quote was not present in the final proof that she and her assistant principal, Samantha Sawruk, approved on 9 April. “That page was not in there,” she stated, pointing out that there was no placeholder or indication that content would be added later.

Furthermore, O’Connell indicated that someone accessed the yearbook after it had been formally approved, allegedly editing it without the knowledge of either her or her assistant principal. “The person that edited it went into it at 1:50 in the afternoon,” she noted, emphasising that this occurred outside of the designated yearbook class’s oversight.
The situation surrounding O’Connell has become even murky due to contradictory statements from a teacher involved in the yearbook process. It has been reported that this teacher originally informed O’Connell that she had not seen the quote before its publication; however, further communications revealed that this teacher had asserted that O’Connell had acknowledged the inclusion of the lyric. O’Connell described this inconsistency as “disappointing,” highlighting the difficulties it poses to her case.
On 20 May, O’Connell was officially placed on paid administrative leave due to “inappropriate conduct” associated with the lyric. She expressed her frustration at not being informed of any concerns from parents or district officials prior to the decision, stating, “They didn’t say, ‘Hey, we’ve received an email from a parent,’ or anything like that, which is so unusual.”
While the situation has taken a toll on her career, O’Connell and her attorney, Jack Webb, are currently seeking a formal hearing regarding her status. O’Connell noted that the controversy has significantly impacted her life, stating, “I’ve been in school leadership for 18 years, and the way they’ve dismissed me has destroyed it.” She expressed deep concern that her reputation has been unfairly damaged, which she believes will have lasting repercussions on her career.
Adding a surreal twist to the unfolding drama, O’Connell received a bouquet of white roses, balloons, and a supportive note from the rapper himself. “Principal O’Connell, I hope these flowers lift up your spirit, wishing you the best,” the note read. O’Connell described the gesture as heartwarming and an unexpected source of encouragement during a tumultuous time.
Despite the negative circumstances surrounding her current predicament, O’Connell has found humour in the situation. Reflecting on the controversy, she quipped, “It is now my favourite quote because literally how ironic is it that that’s the quote and that’s what’s happening.” The lyric has taken on new meaning for her, and with a sense of resilience, she continues to listen to the song for motivation while searching for her next career opportunity.
Meanwhile, the Trout Creek Academy’s Parent Teacher Organisation has named Dr. Patrick Carmichael as the interim principal during this period. The future of O’Connell’s career, along with the details of discussions regarding her non-reappointment, remains uncertain as the school board meeting approaches. The situation serves as a reminder of how quickly circumstances can change in the realm of education, often leaving lasting effects on staff members and their reputations.
