Friends, which originally aired from 1994 to 2004, concluded its run with an emotional finale. Faris’s character first appeared in the ninth episode of season ten, titled “The One with the Birth Mother.” Her storyline involved deciding to allow Chandler, played by the late Matthew Perry, and Monica, portrayed by Courteney Cox, to adopt her twins, ultimately named Jack and Erica. Although she featured in only four episodes, Faris found her experience to be daunting and complex.
During the interview with Variety, Faris candidly expressed her uncertainties about fitting into the ensemble cast, especially during the sentimental moments that characterised the series’ closing stages. She described times when the cast would gather for group hugs, emphasising her feelings of exclusion. “I would be the only person that would be about two feet away from the group hug,” Faris recalled, noting that while the cast members encouraged her to join in, she felt it was inappropriate.

Faris admitted that such moments were overwhelming for her. “I told the cast, ‘You guys, this feels wrong,’” she remarked. However, she later recognised how special these instances were, particularly with the presence of a live audience. “Those people in that audience really knew what it meant to witness the end of this incredible show,” she added, reflecting on the significance of being part of such a historic television series.
The ensemble cast of Friends, apart from Faris, included notable actors such as Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and Matthew Perry. The series culminated in an emotional farewell that left a profound impact on fans and cast members alike. Paul Rudd also joined the cast as Phoebe Buffay’s love interest, Mike Hannigan, adding another layer to the show’s legacy in its concluding season.
Faris also took a moment to remember Perry when speaking to PEOPLE in 2024. “It was an honour, and he was just an incredible person,” she said, referring to the late actor who passed away in October 2023. She acknowledged that her interactions with Perry were brief but meaningful. “I wish I knew him better. It feels a little audacious for me to speak too much about somebody that I felt like I had brief interactions with, but they were wonderful,” she expressed.
She also revealed that Perry was instrumental in her joining the cast of Friends. “He told me that he’d seen me in Lost in Translation and he thought I was good,” she recalled. Faris attributed her welcoming experience on set largely to Perry and Courteney Cox, noting their kindness during her time shooting the show, particularly given the pressure she felt taking on such a pivotal role.
Reflecting on her unique experience, Faris joked about the likelihood of reruns featuring the last season of Friends. “They don’t rerun too much of the last season because I think I get a check for 9 pence every, you know, four months,” she laughed, showcasing her light-hearted approach amidst her initial apprehensions.
Following her stint on Friends, Faris has continued to thrive in her acting career, featuring in various comedy films like The House Bunny and What’s Your Number? She also found success with her own sitcom, Mom, which aired from 2013 to 2020. Currently, she has returned to the Scary Movie franchise and has a new project, Spa Weekend, set to premiere in August.
Anna Faris’s reflections offer a glimpse into the emotional landscape of one of television’s most beloved shows. Her sentiments resonate with both fans and actors who hold a piece of Friends close to their hearts, ensuring that its legacy continues to flourish.
