Former male model Hoyt Richards is sharing his experiences with a controversial spiritual group in the new HBO docuseries, *Bring Me the Beauties: A Model Cult*. The three-part series, which began airing on June 1, delves into his two-decade involvement with the group known as Eternal Values, led by Frederick von Mierers, a character described by Richards as both charismatic and enigmatic.

The foundation of Richards’s story begins on a beach in Nantucket in 1978, where, as a teenager, he first encountered von Mierers. He was intrigued by the leader’s discussions about Eastern religion and ancient civilisations, which captivated the young Richards. Their relationship blossomed over the years, leading Richards to visit von Mierers regularly while studying at Princeton University. The allure of the group, which was comprised of around 30 individuals drawn together by a shared spiritual commitment, drew him deeper into its teachings.
Richards recalls his experiences in von Mierers’ apartment in Manhattan, describing it as a surreal environment that seemed untouched by the materialism prevalent in New York during the 1980s. He noted von Mierers’ unique approach in contrast to other leaders of the time, reflecting on his sophisticated style: “He was the Brooks Brothers’ version,” Richards remarked.

During his college years, an injury forced Richards to reassess his aspirations, leading von Mierers to suggest a career in modelling or acting as a potential path. This advice proved fruitful; soon after, he secured his first modelling contract through a connection made in the group. However, as he excelled in his new career, concerns from family and friends about his involvement in what they suspected to be a cult began to mount.
Early criticisms from Richards’s loved ones were dismissed with defiance, as he insisted that he could never be ensnared in a cult-like situation. Yet, as he became more entrenched in Eternal Values, he grappled with increasingly complex emotional responses to the group’s philosophies, particularly its demands for total commitment. He explained how significant portions of his income were funelled back to the group, as he believed giving money was a way to contribute meaningfully.
Von Mierers’s beliefs included apocalyptic predictions, asserting that cataclysmic events would unfold before the millennium. Richards experienced a dissonance between these dire forecasts and the ongoing normalcy he witnessed while travelling for modelling jobs. This cognitive dissonance would ultimately play a pivotal role in his growing disillusionment with the group.
The situation intensified when Richards began a romantic relationship with a woman named Donna, which was expressly forbidden by the group’s doctrines. Confronting his peers about this relationship led to an overwhelming backlash, shattering his perceptions of the group’s values. After being coerced into severing ties with Donna through an impersonal fax, Richards found himself at a crossroads. This pointed confrontation opened his eyes to the fact that he was merely a cog within a controlling system.
Following his exit from the group and a period of recovery in California, Richards began to explore the nature of his experiences. A chance encounter with Steve Hassan’s *Combating Cult Mind Control* prompted his recognition of the cult-like dynamics he had been part of. He expressed feelings of devastation upon realising that he had been living a profound deception.
Today, Richards is engaged to Donna, his once-forbidden love, and they plan to marry in September. The journey they have undertaken together has not always been smooth, but their re-connection provided a grounding sense of normalcy in Richards’s life. “I wanted to reclaim the life that I felt I had lost,” he revealed, illustrating his desire to rebuild a future based on genuine connection.
In addition to pursuing his acting and modelling career, Richards is now committed to helping others escape similar circumstances, using his own life lessons as a foundation for outreach. He emphasised the importance of recognizing the emotional and psychological impacts of involvement in abusive groups, advocating for a candid acknowledgment as the first step in the healing process.
*Bring Me the Beauties: A Model Cult* not only chronicles Richards’s personal journey but also serves as a cautionary tale about the complexities and nuances of cult dynamics, airing weekly on HBO and HBO Max.
