A family from Utah has shared their remarkable experience of overcoming a significant medical challenge during pregnancy after discovering their baby was likely to be born with a serious spinal condition known as spina bifida. Maddison Vance, the mother, spoke to KSL News Utah about the unexpected journey that led to a rare surgical intervention while she was still carrying her daughter, Jaycie.

During a routine 20-week ultrasound, the couple received distressing news that would alter the course of their lives. According to Maddison and her husband, Grem Vance, they initially sensed no issues while eagerly awaiting their baby’s arrival. However, the doctor’s findings revealed that their unborn child might have spina bifida, a condition that occurs when the spine and spinal cord do not develop fully, resulting in potential mobility and developmental challenges.

Faced with the life-changing diagnosis, the Vance family researched their options and discovered a pioneering fetal surgery that could mitigate the severity of the condition. This procedure aimed to repair the spine before birth, giving the baby an opportunity to grow without additional spinal damage. The couple opted for the surgery, which took place at Primary Children’s Hospital, located just a short distance from their home.
The surgical procedure itself was complex. Maddison elaborated on the operation’s intricacies, describing how surgeons made an incision from her belly button downwards to access the uterus. With the aid of specialised tools and imaging, the medical team successfully stitched up the opening in Jaycie’s spine, thereby providing essential protection for the developing organs.
Recovery presented its own set of challenges for Maddison. “I just had to recover while I was still growing her,” she reflected. The dual process of healing from surgery while carrying her child was a difficult but necessary journey for the family.
After undergoing the surgery, Maddison was able to deliver baby Jaycie, who was born with a visible scar on her back—a testament to the surgical intervention that had taken place in utero. In addition, Maddison has a matching incision on her abdomen, symbolising their shared experience. The couple regards these scars not with regret, but as a physical reminder of their resilience and the intimate bond they formed during such a challenging period.
Now, eight months after her birth, baby Jaycie is thriving and developing normally, much to the joy of her parents. Maddison described her daughter as “just a normal, perfect baby,” adding that Jaycie’s life is a testament to the success of the surgery.
Reflecting on the journey, Maddison expressed gratitude for how far they have come, stating, “I appreciate my scar and hers. It was just a wild ride.” The Vance family’s experience underscores the importance of medical advancements and the hope that exists for parents navigating unforeseen challenges during pregnancy.
This story not only highlights the emotional and physical challenges faced by families dealing with severe health conditions but also showcases the effectiveness of modern medical procedures, providing a glimpse of the hope and resilience many parents find in similar situations.
