A 23-year-old man who went missing while swimming off the coast of Siesta Key Beach, Florida, has been located and returned safely following an extensive overnight search. Ethan McNary, who was reported unaccounted for after failing to return to shore, prompted a rapid response from local authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard on Tuesday evening.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 10:30 p.m. from a concerned individual who reported seeing an adult male, later identified as McNary, enter the water without re-emerging. Initial responders arrived at the scene and found personal belongings belonging to the missing swimmer on the beach, deepening their concern for his safety.
In their efforts to locate McNary, the authorities deployed their dive team and coordinated with various local agencies and the Coast Guard. Search efforts continued throughout the night, as teams scoured both the waters and the surrounding area for any sign of the swimmer.

At approximately dawn the following day, officials made a significant breakthrough in their search. McNary was discovered approximately four miles away from the beach at an intersection near Beneva Road and Clark Road. He was confirmed to be safe, bringing relief to his family and the community.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude for the collective efforts of all agencies involved in the search. “We would like to thank our SCSO personnel, partnering law enforcement agencies, and everyone who assisted in the extensive search efforts that led to this positive outcome,” a spokesperson stated.
Local resident Debby Darby shared her surprise at the unusual nature of the incident in the typically quiet beach town. With a population of around 5,500, Darby noted that while police activity is common, it is rarely as intense as it was during the search for McNary. “There’s police activity frequently, but not like tonight, where there’s police cars and fire rescue,” she remarked. “When I saw it on the beach, I thought that’s really odd because you don’t see things happen on the beach.”
As of now, officials have not provided additional information regarding the circumstances of McNary’s disappearance, including the reasons behind his decision to swim or the events that led him to be found miles away from where he had entered the water. The local community remains grateful for the successful outcome, though questions still linger about the hours preceding his safe recovery.
In light of this incident, authorities are likely to remind beachgoers to take necessary safety precautions when swimming alone or in unfamiliar waters. The swift response of local law enforcement and emergency services, however, serves as a testament to the commitment of the Sarasota County community toward ensuring the safety of its residents and visitors alike.
The Siesta Key area, known for its idyllic beaches and vibrant tourism industry, will bound to reflect on this unusual occurrence, hoping for a continued commitment to safety and vigilance along its shores.
