A New Zealand family is rallying support for their seven-year-old daughter, Odelia Simonsen, following her heart-wrenching diagnosis of a rare and incurable brain tumour. Just last month, Odelia was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a swift-growing and devastating form of cancer situated in the brainstem. This diagnosis has left her family desperate for both emotional and financial support as they seek to fulfil her cherished wishes.

Odelia’s mother, Melissa Simonsen, expressed the profound sadness the family felt upon receiving their daughter’s diagnosis. “We were absolutely heartbroken and sick to be told,” she recounted. Odelia herself has been grappling with the news, understanding that a cancerous tumour is present in her brain, a reality that weighs heavily on her young heart.

Currently, Odelia is undergoing treatment at Starship Hospital in Auckland, where she has been receiving care for over three weeks. She is set to undergo an additional six weeks of radiation therapy, aimed at slowing the progression of the tumour. While the treatment is vital, it means that the family is away from their home and familiar surroundings, adjusting to a new life punctuated by hospital visits and appointments.
In a bid to support Odelia, her family has initiated a fundraising campaign via Givealittle, seeking to gather donations that will allow her to experience a few treasured moments during this challenging time. Odelia has shared her dreams with her family, which include travelling to New Zealand’s picturesque South Island, visiting the Australia Zoo, and, in a more personal longing, owning a pony. Her mother described the campaign as an opportunity to create lasting memories during a period that could bring her daughter genuine joy.
As of early June, the fundraiser has already seen an outpouring of generosity, raising over $20,000. Melissa expressed her gratitude, emphasizing how profoundly touched the family has been by the support from strangers and friends alike. “We are so blown away by the kindness of every person who has donated,” she stated, adding that they are determined to make Odelia’s dreams a reality as they navigate this difficult journey.
The plea for help was originally set up by Odelia’s aunt, Hailey Sinkinson. In her message, Hailey vividly described the moment the family received the devastating news about Odelia’s health. She noted the significant emotional and financial impact the situation has had on the entire family, who have spent nearly a month away from home, facing the dual challenges of medical treatment and the associated costs.
The distressing journey began when Melissa noticed her daughter struggling with eye movement and tilting her head to see properly. Concerned, she sought medical advice, which led to a series of scans and the shocking discovery of a developing tumour on Odelia’s brainstem. After further evaluation, Odelia was officially diagnosed with DIPG, a condition that significantly impacts coordination, balance, and numerous other physical functions.
Despite the serious nature of her illness, Odelia’s bravery has shone through. Her mother described her as both “brave” and “strong,” attributes acknowledged by the medical staff at the hospital. Odelia has managed to find pockets of happiness amidst adversity, cherishing moments spent with friends and family as she strives to maintain a sense of normalcy.
Although the future remains uncertain, Odelia’s spirit and the love of her family and supporters continue to fuel hope. Melissa remains steadfast, stating, “We still hold hope she will be that miracle.” The support of the community through donations not only alleviates some of the financial burden but also contributes to the creation of joyful memories, which are now more precious than ever.
As Odelia’s family journeys through this challenging period, their story serves as a powerful reminder of resilience in the face of adversity, showcasing the importance of community support and the unconditional love that binds families together during life’s most testing times.
