A tragic incident in Poweshiek County, Iowa, has resulted in the derailment of two power engines and 17 train cars, significantly damaging the railway infrastructure. The collision occurred on 3 June when a semi-truck carrying a tractor collided with an Iowa Interstate Railroad train around 12:37 PM.

The Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office promptly responded to reports of the crash at a train intersection located on Highway 21. Sheriff Matt Maschmann confirmed that the incident led to the death of one occupant from the semi-truck. Another individual from the same vehicle sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital via Life Flight. As of now, their identities have not been disclosed.
Eyewitness accounts indicate the severity of the accident, with video footage depicting multiple train cars piled on top of one another. The emergency response was substantial, featuring fire rescue trucks and multiple police vehicles at the scene, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
According to the sheriff, the involved train was part of the Iowa Interstate Railroad. The collision caused a significant derailment, as both engines and numerous train cars came off the tracks. “The engines and train cars have derailed and significant damage to the rails occurred,” Maschmann reported in a press release following the event.
Sgt. Mike McCormick of the local police described the sequence of events, stating that the semi-truck transporting a large John Deere tractor entered the train intersection just before being struck by the oncoming train. “The large freight they were hauling probably played a big role in knocking the train off the tracks,” he noted, reiterating the potential impact of such heavy cargo.
In the aftermath of the incident, Highway 21 was closed between Highway 6 and Old 6 Road as emergency crews worked to manage the scene and ensure safety. Sheriff Maschmann indicated that initial reports suggested a fire at the site; however, upon arrival, the emergency teams did not observe any visible flames.
The Iowa State Patrol is currently conducting an investigation into the crash. Their spokesman, Sgt. Alex Dinkla, assured the public that no hazardous materials were involved in the derailment, alleviating concerns that often accompany such incidents.
