A man from Smyrna, Delaware, has been charged with murder in relation to the tragic death of his 10-year-old daughter. Badara Kone, aged 49, was taken into custody after local authorities discovered the body of his daughter, Fatima Kone, in her bedroom on the morning of May 28.

The incident came to light when Delaware State Police (DSP) were called to the family residence shortly after 2 a.m. Upon arrival, they found Fatima deceased, and an investigation was promptly initiated by the DSP’s Homicide Unit. Initial findings indicated that Fatima had sustained severe physical injuries due to alleged repeated strikes from a leather belt, which Badara referred to as a method of discipline.

According to police reports, the events unfolded on May 27 when it is believed that Fatima was struck multiple times. Following this incident, she reportedly fell to the ground, hitting her head against a piece of furniture. Despite attempts by her older siblings to assist her, it seems that no emergency services were contacted promptly, resulting in a delay that would ultimately follow the tragic outcome.
In tandem with the investigation, investigators additionally assessed Fatima’s brothers, aged 11 and 15, who were taken to a local hospital for welfare checks. Evidence gathered during this process suggested a disturbing pattern of continuous physical abuse within the household, prompting further charges against Badara.
He was initially arrested and charged with two counts of continuous child abuse and eight counts of fourth-degree child abuse, with a cash bond set at £17,000. However, as the investigation progressed, and following a determination by the Delaware Division of Forensic Science that Fatima’s death was a homicide resulting from multiple blunt-force injuries, more severe charges were pressed. Badara is now facing charges of murder by abuse or neglect and his current cash bond has been raised to £180,000.
The local community has expressed shock and disbelief over the incident. Krista, a neighbour who has lived in the area for over a decade, described her concerns over the safety of children in the neighbourhood. “I’ve been here for 12 years, and we’ve never had anything like this happen before,” she remarked. Similarly, another neighbour, Larry Borgman, noted that the Kone family had only moved into the community a year prior and had introduced themselves only a week before the tragedy, stating that they seemed like a pleasant family.
As local authorities continue the investigation, the community is left grappling with the implications of this tragic event. Support organisations, such as the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline, remind those who suspect child abuse to report their concerns, emphasising the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children.
This heart-wrenching case has ignited conversations around child welfare and domestic abuse, highlighting the vital necessity for communities to be vigilant and proactive in protecting the rights and safety of children.
Delaware State Police have requested that anyone with further information related to the case come forward to assist in their ongoing inquiry. As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on providing support to the surviving siblings and ensuring proper care for those affected by this harrowing outcome.
