Republican Congressman Tom Kean Jr. is in the spotlight ahead of New Jersey’s primary elections, set to take place on June 2. However, he has not been seen in public since March 5, raising concerns and speculation regarding his absence. Despite this, former President Donald Trump has endorsed Kean for reelection in a district deemed a significant target for Democrats in the upcoming November elections.
Trump praised Kean as “A Tremendous Advocate of our America First Agenda” and emphasised his dedication to its goals. Yet, while the endorsement is robust, Kean’s lack of visibility has been notable. His campaign has remained tight-lipped about the circumstances of his absence, with reports indicating that he is currently dealing with a personal medical issue that has not been publicly disclosed.

With the primary elections approaching, Kean is running uncontested in the Republican primary. Meanwhile, four Democrats are competing against each other to secure the chance to challenge him in the November elections. Kean’s absence from the public eye has resulted in him missing over 100 votes in the House of Representatives, which has raised eyebrows among his constituents and political observers.

Just a day prior to the primary, Trump reiterated his support for Kean on social media, urging voters to turn out for the Republican congressman. “Tom Kean has my Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election. Election Day is Tuesday, June 2nd. GET OUT AND VOTE FOR TOM — HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!” he declared on Truth Social. Kean responded on his campaign Twitter account, thanking Trump for the endorsement and encouraging Republicans to cast their votes.
Despite the public interest in Kean’s condition and whereabouts, his campaign team has not clarified whether Trump or his aides have communicated directly with him since March. Daniel Scharfenberger, Kean’s chief of staff, alongside other spokespersons, declined to respond to inquiries about the congressman’s welfare and expected timeline for his return to public life.
Republican operative Harrison Neely has been managing media responses for Kean’s campaign during his absence. He confirmed that Kean is “not overseas” but provided little else in terms of details about the congressman’s location or health status. Neely hinted at an announcement from Kean set to come on the afternoon of the primary, although no specifics were provided.
Earlier in May, House Speaker Mike Johnson noted that he had spoken to Kean by phone, describing him as sounding positive and hopeful. Johnson expressed that House leadership is awaiting Kean’s return. He added, “I don’t even know the details and I respect that. It’s members’ personal privacy on whatever matters they’re dealing with.”
Scharfenberger had previously explained to The New York Times that Kean is handling a personal health issue and is expected back soon. “There’s no cameras where Tom is,” he stated, amplifying the sense that Kean is focusing on his health away from the public eye.
On May 21, Kean reached out to David Wildstein, editor-in-chief of The New Jersey Globe, relaying that he anticipated returning to the campaign trail within a few weeks. He acknowledged the importance of public transparency and expressed gratitude for his constituents’ support during this challenging time. However, he did not divulge the specifics of his medical situation nor his current location, maintaining his privacy amidst growing public curiosity.
As the election date approaches, the political landscape for New Jersey is rapidly evolving. Voters will soon decide on their preferred candidates, while Kean’s health and re-emergence remain topics of considerable interest. The results of the primary could set the stage for a tense battle in the general elections later this year, particularly as Kean navigates this challenging moment in his political career.
