An 18-year-old man, identified as Marquez Williams, has been taken into custody following a troubling incident involving a transgender woman at Cedar Point amusement park in Ohio. The alleged assault, which took place on May 25, has raised concerns regarding public safety at popular leisure destinations.

According to reports from the Sandusky Police Department, Williams approached his victim from behind and forcibly pulled down her skirt and underwear, exposing her to those nearby, including children. The incident occurred around 8:30 PM, shortly after the victims had enjoyed a ride on the Top Thrill 2 coaster. April Dempster, a friend of the victim, described the event as shocking, stating that it took a moment for them to comprehend what had occurred.
“We were there enjoying my birthday vacation,” Dempster stated. “We had just finished riding when this guy ran behind us and yanked my friend’s skirt down to her ankles.” She described the immediate panic that ensued, as she quickly ran to alert park security about the assault.

Dempster’s swift actions led to a security guard being informed, who then radioed for assistance. This triggered a pursuit as Williams fled through the amusement park parking lot, navigating between vehicles in an apparent attempt to evade capture. Dempster noted that he led officers on a lengthy chase, complicating their efforts to apprehend him.
Police reports indicate that Williams ignored multiple commands to halt, prompting one officer to deploy a taser. The taser was effective, causing Williams to collapse to the ground. While waiting for an ambulance, tensions reportedly heightened among onlookers, necessitating backup for the officers at the scene. After a struggle, Williams eventually complied and was restrained by law enforcement.
Following the altercation, the suspect was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries, including a scrape to his face. He has since been charged with multiple offences, including public indecency, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and obstructing official business. Court records confirm that Williams is scheduled to appear in Sandusky Municipal Court on June 3.
In the aftermath of the assault, Dempster expressed concern for her friend, stating that the incident profoundly affected her well-being. “They were pretty rattled the first few days after it happened,” she commented. “They didn’t want to go back to Cedar Point. They didn’t want to go outside.” However, she added that her friend is gradually recovering, aided by a supportive network.
Dempster highlighted the importance of safety in public spaces, saying, “We were out having a great day, and there was no reason for anyone to put their hands on anyone.” This sentiment reflects a broader concern about the need for both enforced safety measures and a supportive environment for vulnerable groups, especially in family-oriented settings like amusement parks.
As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen what measures Cedar Point may undertake in response to this incident. The park has been approached for comment but has not yet issued a statement regarding the assault or its potential implications for park safety policies.
The Cedar Point episode has reignited discussions about public conduct and the need for vigilance in safeguarding all individuals within community spaces. As authorities work to resolve the case, the focus remains on the importance of creating inclusive environments where everyone can enjoy their time without fear of harassment or assault.
