In an inspiring and unconventional renovation, Elle Leonard, a 34-year-old mother from Nashville, Tennessee, has transformed her formal living room into a vibrant indoor basketball court. This innovative project sprouted from her desire to create a space where her family could bond and enjoy quality time together, rather than merely impressing guests.
When Leonard and her family moved into their new home, the space just inside the front door felt like a blank canvas. With aspirations for the room to make a striking first impression, she initially grappled with typical decor ideas common among homeowners. However, Leonard soon realised that the most important aspect of the space was not how it appeared to visitors, but how it functioned for her family.
“I felt a lot of pressure for it to make a great first impression,” Leonard remarked. “But then I thought, why not make it special for us?” It was this shift in perspective that opened the door to a bold concept—the idea of converting the room into a basketball court, a passion Leonard has enjoyed for many years.
As her son’s fourth birthday approached, the notion transitioned from a light-hearted joke to feasible reality. “I started thinking less about creating the perfect room and more about creating fun memories for him,” Leonard recalled. Despite her enthusiasm, convincing her husband proved to be a challenge as she often shared her ‘best ideas’ late at night. “When I told him I wanted to build a basketball court in our living room, he gave me a half-asleep, ‘Okay, sounds good, hun.'” It wasn’t until parcels began arriving at their door that he realised she was serious.
With the green light from her husband, Leonard dove into the project, which took form surprisingly swiftly. The flooring consists of interlocking foam mats that mimic hardwood, while painter’s tape was utilised to mark the court lines. Despite the quick installation of the flooring, Leonard described the challenge of carefully laying down the court markings, particularly the three-point arc, as a test of her patience.
The total cost for this successful venture was about £700, primarily attributed to the flooring materials. However, Leonard noted that the true value of the court extended far beyond monetary considerations. What was once an empty space has evolved into the heart of family activities, facilitating everything from spirited after-dinner games to rounds of P-I-G.
“This space is now one of our favourite family traditions,” Leonard stated. Generally, after dinner, the family spends time playing quick basketball games, and the competitiveness has increased, prompting discussion about even adding padding around the fireplace for safety. “Instead of being just a room we walk past, it’s a place where we gather and create memories,” she added.
Leonard took to social media to share her project, and while she anticipated criticism for the unconventional choice of having a basketball court in the front of her home, the response was overwhelmingly positive. “The feedback has genuinely surprised me,” she said. “People are looking for permission to make their homes work for their families rather than solely focusing on appearances.”
Reflecting on the reaction, Leonard believes the key message resonating with viewers was about creating spaces that reflect the lifestyle of those living in them. “We get infinitely more use out of this court than we would from a formal sitting room filled with furniture nobody touches,” she explained.
