A 14-year-old boy is currently missing after a school trip to Wildwood, New Jersey, during which he entered the ocean on Monday, June 1. Davoris Carter was reported missing just before 1:30 p.m. local time, sparking immediate search efforts by emergency services and local authorities.

According to a joint statement issued by the Wildwood Fire Department, Police Department, and Beach Patrol, officers were dispatched following reports of swimmers in distress. While some individuals were rescued, with one taken to hospital and two others receiving on-site treatment, it soon became clear that Davoris was unaccounted for.

Concerned relatives of the missing boy, including his grandmother, Kenya Pippen, have expressed their distress over the situation. Pippen emphasised that Davoris, who has special needs, is a “happy” and “great kid.” She has raised concerns about the level of supervision during the school outing, criticising the staff for what she perceived as a failure to adequately monitor the students.

Initial search efforts involved multiple rescue crews utilising personal watercraft and rescue boards, with additional support from the U.S. Coast Guard, New Jersey State Police, and other local agencies deploying boats and helicopters. After two hours of searching the beach and surrounding waters, land-based operations were halted, although aerial searches continued.
Fire Department Chief Ernie Troiano III provided further insight regarding the rescue attempts, noting that strong currents significantly complicated the efforts. “The water was running pretty strong north to south when we went down there,” he stated, underscoring the challenges presented by the tide and current patterns at that time.
Pippen mentioned that Davoris’s condition necessitated one-to-one supervision. She claimed that a family member who was responsible for him briefly left to get food, during which time Davoris entered the ocean. Pippen voiced her frustration at the lack of adult supervision, specifically highlighting that there were reportedly no lifeguards on duty at the beach. “If you’re scared of water, you don’t let children in the water unsupervised,” she argued.
In an emotional plea, Pippen described the situation as a “disgrace,” voicing her discontent with the circumstances leading to her grandson’s disappearance. She also noted that Davoris had entered the water fully clothed, leaving his swim shorts on the beach. “He doesn’t deserve this. He’s just a kid. He was supposed to graduate on Wednesday,” she lamented, expressing both sadness and anger at the lack of vigilance shown by the adults supervising the trip.
The community has rallied in support of Davoris’s family as search efforts persist, with volunteers joining in the hunt. The family members are calling for further accountability and action to ensure the safety of children on school outings in the future.
As of now, no further sightings of Davoris have been reported, and his family remains desperate for answers. The Wildwood Fire Department has been contacted for additional comment, although no response has yet been received. The case continues to draw attention as authorities and community members alike hope for Davoris’s safe return.
