In a recent interview, renowned director Steven Spielberg revealed that actor Tom Selleck was initially the first choice for the beloved role of Indiana Jones in the classic film *Raiders of the Lost Ark*. This unexpected twist in casting history highlights the intricate and often unpredictable nature of Hollywood’s decision-making.
Spielberg, known for his prolific career and collaborations with various talented actors, discussed the audition process on an episode of the podcast “IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson.” He reminisced about how both he and George Lucas, who co-created the character and wrote the film, were eager to bring Selleck aboard for the project that debuted in 1981.

“He came in, and he read for the part. He was good,” Spielberg stated, recalling the impressive audition that convinced him of Selleck’s suitability for the role. The director expressed his enthusiasm at the time, revealing that they had in fact offered the part to Selleck. However, their plans were thwarted by a prior commitment that the actor had with CBS to star in the network’s hit series *Magnum P.I.*
“What we didn’t realise was that CBS had an outstanding contract with Tom,” Spielberg explained. As soon as the network learned of Spielberg’s interest in Selleck, it swiftly moved to put *Magnum P.I.* into production, making it impossible for Selleck to take on the role of Indy.

In a light-hearted remark, Spielberg added that if Selleck had joined the cast, he would have requested that the actor shave off his iconic moustache. “Maybe if the films had been as successful, he could have demanded the moustache,” he joked, emphasising the character’s distinctive look which has become an integral part of Indiana Jones’s identity over the years.
This story has taken on a new layer with the release of Selleck’s memoir, *You Never Know*, which details his experiences in the industry and his auditions for pivotal roles, including that of Indiana Jones. Reflecting on the process, Selleck noted that his audition took place during a critical time in his career. He was waiting for news about the *Magnum P.I.* pilot while working on his audition for Spielberg.
In a previous interview, Selleck opened up about the uncertainties actors face in their careers, stating, “Acting is a lot about failing, endless failures. If you’re going to get in the acting business, you better get an appetite for it.” He remembered his audition with Spielberg and Lucas fondly, appreciating the opportunity to meet his idols without feeling overwhelmed by the pressure of the moment.
“I was a big Star Wars fan, so I’m certain I brought that up,” he recalled with nostalgic sentiment. Despite the excitement of the encounter, he ultimately had to decline the role of Indiana Jones when he learned that *Magnum P.I.* had been officially greenlit by CBS.
As fate would have it, the role was ultimately filled by another talented actor, Harrison Ford. Spielberg revealed that the casting decision was itself influenced by a fortunate turn of events. At the time they were making casting choices for *Raiders*, Lucas had recently screened *The Empire Strikes Back* for Spielberg. After watching Ford’s performance as Han Solo, Spielberg approached Lucas with the suggestion of casting Ford as Indiana Jones.
“George looked at me funny and said, ‘Well, but he’s Han Solo,’” Spielberg recalled. The director countered with a compelling argument, reminding Lucas that actors can embody various characters throughout their careers—even in iconic roles. Ultimately, their discussion led to Ford being cast as the adventurous archaeologist, securing a significant place in cinematic history.
This revelation about Selleck’s near association with the Indiana Jones legacy offers a fascinating insight into the casting process that led to one of the most iconic characters in film. With both Selleck and Ford leaving indelible marks on pop culture, the casting of Indiana Jones serves as a reminder of how the threads of fate and timing can shape the landscape of Hollywood.
While many fans can only imagine a version of *Raiders of the Lost Ark* featuring Tom Selleck, the enduring appeal of the franchise continues to thrive, merging nostalgia with the stars who ultimately made it their own.
