A tragic gas explosion at a Dallas apartment building on 28 May resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a mother and her young son. The incident has left the local community mourning the loss of Marisol Perez, 38, her 18-month-old son Erick, and community activist Sylvia Collins.

Relatives described Marisol as a loving and supportive figure. “Every time we needed something she was there,” her sister Nora Carmona reflected during a vigil on 31 May, where family and friends gathered to honour the deceased. The outpouring of grief highlights the impact of their loss on those who knew them.

According to the Dallas Fire & Rescue Department (DFR), the emergency services received reports of a gas leak at the apartment complex located on 9th Street in Oak Cliff shortly before 1 p.m. As first responders were on their way, a powerful explosion erupted, leading to a significant fire that necessitated a large-scale response.
Approximately 120 firefighters mobilised to control the blaze, evacuating residents from neighbouring buildings. Initial rescue operations quickly transitioned into recovery efforts as hopes of finding survivors diminished. Ultimately, the DFR confirmed the fatalities of three individuals, including Perez and her young son.
Describing her sister, Nora Carmona said, “Everything about her was just love,” emphasising Marisol’s caring nature. The deep bond within the family is evident, with her daughter Vanessa, who turned 10 on 1 June, emerging as the sole survivor from the tragic event. Vanessa was rescued after being spotted crawling through the debris. Tragically, the reality of her loss began to weigh heavily on her, as evidenced by her first real tears shortly after the incident.
In the wake of this devastating event, family members initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the funeral costs for Marisol and Erick. They are determined to ensure they receive the dignified farewell they deserve.
Also among the deceased was Sylvia Collins, a respected community activist. Paul Wingo of the law firm Hamilton Wingo LLP shared that Collins’ family is deeply affected by her loss and is now seeking answers regarding the events that led to this tragedy. Her commitment to community service and advocacy left a lasting impression on many.
Texas State Representative Julie Johnson paid tribute to Collins in a heartfelt post on social media. Johnson acknowledged Collins as a steadfast supporter of the Dallas Democratic Party, praising her kindness, passion, and dedication to uplifting the community. The sentiment expressed by Johnson echoed the feelings of many who mourn Collins.
In addition to the fatalities, at least five others sustained injuries from the explosion. An investigation has been launched by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to uncover the circumstances that led to this catastrophic incident.
As inquiries continue and the community rallies to support the affected families, the profound sense of loss resonates throughout Dallas. The tragic events of 28 May serve as a tragic reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community bonds during times of sorrow.
