Loganville High School, situated in the vicinity of Atlanta, is currently grieving following the tragic passing of 16-year-old student-athlete Gunnar Redding Bible. The school confirmed his death last week via social media, describing it as the result of a prolonged and brave struggle with various serious health conditions.

Gunnar’s mother, Teresa Redding, previously revealed that her son had been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, pneumonia, and lupus shortly before his demise. The announcement made by the school underscores the impact Gunnar had on his peers, coaches, and educators alike, stating that he would “never be forgotten.”

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Loganville High School expressed their condolences, encouraging the community to keep Gunnar’s family in their thoughts and prayers. “After a long and courageous battle, Gunnar transitioned Wednesday,” the statement noted, expressing gratitude for his strength and the positive influence he had on the community.

Tragically, Gunnar’s health deteriorated significantly before his passing. His mother had previously launched a GoFundMe campaign to solicit financial support for medical expenses. In the appeal, Teresa shared that her son had been admitted to the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where his condition required intensive medical care, including being placed on a respirator. “He is only 16, has been an athlete his entire life, and now he is incapable of moving his limbs,” she stated, highlighting the dramatic turn in her son’s health.
Guillain-Barré syndrome is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks the nerves. This condition can lead to severe symptoms, including weakness and paralysis, while lupus is known for causing the immune system to attack healthy tissues and organs. Both conditions pose significant health risks, and in Gunnar’s case, he also faced complications related to his kidneys during his hospitalisation.
The response from the community has been overwhelming, with the GoFundMe campaign raising over £5,700 to assist with Gunnar’s medical bills. Sadly, as his condition worsened, Teresa also noted that her son was left only “able to communicate with blinks.” This heartbreaking update encapsulated the gravity of what the family was facing during this troubling time.
To commemorate Gunnar’s life, a balloon release was organised at Loganville High School over the weekend, allowing students and staff to pay their respects. Nic Snowden, the head coach of the high school football team, expressed profound sorrow at Gunnar’s passing, stating, “We will all miss you dearly, Gunnar.” This sentiment reportedly resonated throughout the event, as many attendees reflected on the void that Gunnar’s absence would leave in the school’s sporting community.
Local media, including WSBTV and Fox 5 Atlanta, covered the story of Gunnar’s struggle, emphasising not only the tragedy of his untimely death but also the significant impact he had on his classmates and the broader community. The tributes pouring in from friends and family speak volumes about the kind of person Gunnar was—someone who inspired others even during his most challenging times.
As Loganville High School navigates through this period of mourning, the legacy of Gunnar Redding Bible will undoubtedly linger in the hearts of those who knew him. The community continues to rally in support of his family, demonstrating the outpouring of care and compassion that characterises Loganville High.
