Jose Luis Diaz, the deceased’s son, shared his distressing experience when he visited the funeral home. Instead of seeing his father’s body, he was met with that of a taller man with hair, a stark contrast to his father’s bald head and 5 feet 3-inch stature. At that time, then-Mayor Eric Adams condemned the alleged misconduct, asserting that “No family in New York City should ever have to endure predatory treatment, especially during their time of grief and mourning.”
The funeral home was fined $600,000 in compensation to affected clients, as well as an additional $100,000 in civil penalties. Yet the latest incident raises questions about the ongoing practices within R.G. Ortiz and whether sufficient changes have been implemented.
