A tragic incident unfolded in Dawson County, Georgia, on the evening of May 29, which resulted in the death of 25-year-old Dave Fiji and serious injuries to his newlywed wife, Jesni Fiji. The couple was aboard a Robinson R66 helicopter when it crashed shortly after leaving their wedding reception.

Dave’s parents, George and Pheba Fiji, provided insight into the joyful and meaningful nature of the couple’s wedding, describing the ceremony as “perfect.” They shared that the couple first crossed paths over a decade ago at church, solidifying a bond that culminated in their marriage on that fateful Friday evening. The wedding took place at The Revere near Dawsonville, attended by hundreds of guests who celebrated the couple’s union.

The couple’s reception concluded around 9:30 p.m., and they departed the venue via helicopter, intending to stay at a hotel in downtown Atlanta. George recounted that the weather had taken a turn for the worse, with fog and rain affecting visibility. Concerned by the deteriorating conditions, he recalled a conversation with his son in which Dave expressed reservations about the visibility, saying he would not have chosen to fly under such circumstances.
Despite the concerns, the helicopter, operated by Prestige Helicopters, took off shortly thereafter. Tragically, only a short time later, it crashed in a densely wooded area southwest of Dawsonville, resulting in the deaths of Dave and the helicopter’s pilot, identified as Nikhil Nargundkar. Jesni, however, was trapped beneath the wreckage and remained there for five hours before rescuers could reach her.
Once free from the debris, Jesni was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Centre, where she was treated for extensive cuts and bruises but fortunately suffered no broken bones. George described his daughter-in-law’s traumatic experience, sharing that she had woken under the wreckage and realised Dave had not survived. “He was already cold,” she said upon touching him, reflecting the harrowing reality of her loss.
Though devastated, Jesni is reportedly on the mend, with plans for her discharge from hospital within a few days. George acknowledged her spirit, affirming that she often speaks of Dave’s character, describing him as kind, gentle, and selfless. In the wake of such a loss, Pheba expressed confidence that the love shared between them transcended even this tragedy.
The investigation into the cause of the accident is being spearheaded by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). A spokesperson for the NTSB confirmed that they, alongside the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office and the FAA, are working to document the accident scene. They indicated that initial analysis revealed the helicopter struck tall trees before impacting the ground. Fortunately, there were no post-impact fires reported.
Preliminary findings suggest weather may have played a role in the crash, with meteorologists from NTSB conducting further studies to ascertain the conditions at the time. The area had experienced rain showers and low clouds, with thunderstorms reported nearby.
Prestige Helicopters, which operates charter flights for weddings and special events from Peachtree-DeKalb Airport, has yet to provide an official statement regarding the incident. The community grieves the loss of Dave, a young man remembered dearly by family and friends, and holds Jesni close in their thoughts during this difficult time.
As investigations continue, the families affected by this tragedy face an uncertain future, grappling with their profound loss while reflecting on the love that Dave and Jesni shared on what was meant to be the happiest day of their lives.
