Charli XCX is set to release her highly anticipated album, ‘Music, Fashion, Film,’ on Friday, 24 July. This will be her second consecutive album without her image on the cover, following the release of ‘Brat’ in May 2024. The artwork for the new album, captured by photographer Aidan Zamiri, prominently features renowned figures from the worlds of music and film: John Cale, Marc Jacobs, and Martin Scorsese, all depicted in a kitchen setting.

The announcement was made on Monday, 1 June, when the Grammy-winning pop star took to Instagram to unveil the cover and share details about the album. ‘Music, Fashion, Film’ comprises 11 tracks, including the previously released singles “Rock Music” and “SS26.” The total runtime for the album is just over 30 minutes.
Zamiri, who has a history of collaboration with Charli, has directed a number of her music videos, such as “360” and “Rock Music,” and was behind the mockumentary film ‘The Moment,’ which explored the Brat phenomenon. The choice to exclude Charli’s image from the cover continues her artistic trend of highlighting other influential figures.
In her artistic journey, Charli has notably transitioned to incorporate guitar-based rock elements into her music. Both “Rock Music” and “SS26” exemplify this sonic shift, setting a new course for the artist who has predominantly been associated with the pop genre. This change indicates her willingness to explore and experiment with different styles in her sound.
Charli XCX’s upcoming album follows her release of a soundtrack for Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of ‘Wuthering Heights’ back in February. The soundtrack featured her collaboration with Cale on the track titled “House,” which also hints at the artistic direction she is exploring in ‘Music, Fashion, Film.’
In a recent interview for British Vogue, Charli articulated her desire for this new work not to be a mere sequel to ‘Brat.’ She asserted that creating another dance-focused album would not resonate with her current artistic vision. “If I’d made another album that felt more dance-leaning, it would have felt really hard, really sad,” she stated. Her partnership with producer A.G. Cook has resulted in an innovative approach, where they blend playful and humorous elements into their music while steering clear of any overly aggressive themes.
Charli’s commitment to pushing boundaries extends to her exploration of the narrative of the album. She expressed excitement about flipping conventional forms in her work and remains aware that such experimentation may not appeal to everyone. “We know there’s gonna be people who are bothered by it, but that’s fine,” she noted.
As the release date approaches, anticipation among fans is building. Both “Rock Music” and “SS26” have garnered attention for their fresh sound and lyrical content. Charli’s ability to reinvent herself has consistently engaged her audience, and ‘Music, Fashion, Film’ promises to be another chapter in her evolving career.
With this new album, Charli XCX aims to merge elements of rock with her pop sensibilities, showcasing her versatility as an artist. The fusion of music, fashion, and film in the title itself reflects not only the subjects of her work but also her multifaceted approach to creativity in today’s entertainment landscape.
As listeners prepare for the album’s debut, Charli’s journey in the music industry continues to captivate, signalling that she is an artist who is here to stay and evolve.
