A recently unsealed court transcript has brought to light new details regarding the investigation into the tragic death of Anna Kepner aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship. The FBI, which took lead on this case, had requested a DNA sample from another teenage passenger, but this individual has neither been accused nor identified as a suspect related to the incident.

Anna’s body was discovered by a housekeeper on 7 November 2022, just hours after the cruise returned to Port Miami. Following her death, FBI agents conducted a rape kit examination, which was sent to their laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, for comprehensive analysis. The DNA obtained from this kit was matched against samples from Anna’s stepbrother, Timothy Hudson, and another unnamed male teenager who was also on the cruise.

While Timothy and Anna had shared a cabin, FBI investigators, guided by surveillance footage, had begun identifying him as a significant focus of their investigation. The footage revealed that the step-siblings entered the cabin minutes apart on 6 November, and Timothy was seen frequently entering and exiting their room over the subsequent hours—Anna was last seen alive around this time.

According to Alejandra Lopez, a representative from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, Anna was found wrapped in a blanket and concealed beneath one of the beds when the housekeeper began cleaning the cabin. The discovery raised immediate alarms and triggered a swift FBI response as agents awaited the ship’s return.
As the investigation progressed, the FBI requested DNA samples not only from Timothy but also from the other minor male on board who had interacted with Anna during the cruise. Despite complying with the request, the second teenager was excluded as a contributor to the DNA found on Anna, a conclusion drawn from the lab tests, as stated by Lopez during a February hearing. She reported that the DNA from Timothy and Anna was found to be “1.2 septillion times more likely” than any other contributor.
Timothy Hudson was subsequently arrested in early February 2023 after prosecutors received the DNA test results. Initially charged as a minor, he faced severe allegations of murder and aggravated sexual abuse. Following a grand jury indictment, his case was upgraded to an adult charge, indicating the gravity of the accusations against him.
The grand jury determined that Timothy had executed the “willful, deliberate, malicious and premeditated killing” of Anna Kepner, alleging that this occurred in the course of committing aggravated sexual abuse. If convicted, he could face up to two life sentences for these offences, with his trial scheduled to commence in September 2023.
The investigation has raised questions and concerns surrounding the potentially traumatic events that occurred aboard the cruise ship, prompting discussions about safety measures for young passengers in such settings. As updates continue to unfold, those connected with the case await the outcome of the upcoming trial, hoping for justice in light of the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding Anna’s death.
