Former ‘Saturday Night Live’ cast member Sasheer Zamata has shared her reflections on turning 40, celebrating the milestone with a fresh perspective and a commitment to self-care. The actress, who marked her birthday on May 6, enjoyed a tranquil stay in Japan, where she immersed herself in nature while relaxing in a treehouse overlooking a river.
During an exclusive chat with PEOPLE at the Los Angeles premiere of her forthcoming film, ‘Masters of the Universe,’ Zamata expressed enthusiasm for entering this new decade of her life. “I feel good,” she stated, noting the significance of this age milestone. Not one to adhere to preconceived notions about turning 40, she adds a sense of personal contentment to the mix.

Reflecting on her birthday getaway, Zamata explained that the serene environment of Japan was restorative. “It was really peaceful and calming to be in Japan,” she recalled. The experience in the heart of nature sparked a deeper focus on her aspirations moving forward, including a desire to prioritise herself in her forties.
When questioned about any aspirations she has for the coming decade, Zamata shared her intention to shift the lens of her life. “I want to bring into my 40s the energy of doing me and not doing other people,” she voiced. Her honesty revealed that much of her thirties was spent navigating the requirements of others. However, with her new outlook, she is determined to embrace her individuality.

The actress, known for her creative flair, described herself as “very crafty” and revealed a passion for gardening and flower arranging. She spoke about her desire to create more art and engage in hands-on projects over the next ten years. “I have a lot of pressed flowers that I have not arranged in anything yet,” she noted enthusiastically. The ambition to learn new skills is also on her agenda, with crochet and even acquiring a new language—Spanish—high on her list.
In ‘Masters of the Universe’, Zamata takes on the role of Suzie, a colleague of the film’s protagonist, Adam Glenn, also known as He-Man, played by Nicholas Galitzine. The movie’s storyline follows a young man on Earth who uncovers a magnificent secret: he is the prince of an alien realm. Tasked with retrieving a magical sword to safeguard his kingdom, the character’s journey unfolds in a fantastical adventure.
The film features an impressive ensemble cast, including noted actors like Camila Mendes, Jared Leto, Alison Brie, Idris Elba, and Kristen Wiig, which adds further excitement for audiences. Zamata expressed her enthusiasm in a recent Instagram post, which accompanied a photograph from the film’s premiere. “I had such an amazing time at the #MastersOfTheUniverse premiere!! I had a blast being a part of this movie, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it!” she wrote to her followers.
Zamata first gained fame through her stint on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ where she performed from 2014 to 2017. Since leaving the beloved sketch comedy show, she has expanded her portfolio, appearing in various other productions such as ‘Home Economics’ and ‘Agatha All Along’.
As she embarks on this new chapter in her life, the future looks promising for Zamata, both personally and professionally. Her film, ‘Masters of the Universe’, is set for theatrical release on June 5, and both she and her cast mates are eager for audiences to experience the magic of the film.
As Zamata navigates her forties, her focus on self-discovery, creativity and personal well-being seem to guide her journey. Only time will tell how she will continue to embrace this exciting new era.
