Nichelle Lewis, a newcomer to the world of Broadway, is preparing for a significant moment in her career as she receives her first Tony Award nomination for her role as Sarah in the revival of the acclaimed musical *Ragtime*. Speaking with PEOPLE ahead of the Tony Awards ceremony, set to take place on June 7, Lewis reflects on the journey that has brought her to this prestigious point.

At just 27, Lewis steps into a role previously held by Broadway icon Audra McDonald, who won a Tony for her portrayal of Sarah in the original 1998 production. McDonald, who is often referred to as a “mother, icon, queen diva,” has imparted valuable advice to Lewis throughout her journey. One piece of guidance that resonates deeply with the young actress is McDonald’s reminder to “make sure you’re leaving Sarah at the theatre.”
This admonition, as Lewis admits, has proven to be challenging. Portraying a character that embodies both fragility and resilience requires emotional depth, and Lewis finds herself giving a part of herself to the role each night. “I truly do give so much of me when I’m doing the performance,” she explains, acknowledging the difficulty of separating herself from Sarah after each show.
*Ragtime* is a powerful narrative set in a rapidly changing America during the early 20th century. The musical weaves together the stories of three distinct groups: a wealthy white family, Jewish immigrants, and a Black musician seeking a better life. At the centre of this complex tale is Sarah, a young mother whose love story with Coalhouse Walker Jr. is marred by the harsh realities of racism and societal injustice.
Lewis’s portrayal of Sarah has garnered significant acclaim, with critics acknowledging her ability to capture the character’s innocence and hope while showcasing her undeniable strength. “It’s a performance that honours the character’s legacy while allowing Lewis to make the role distinctly her own,” said a reviewer, highlighting the actress’s talent and dedication.
Despite the emotional toll that comes with playing such a heart-wrenching character, Lewis finds joy in the nuances of the role. “I love her strength and the way she remains hopeful amidst chaos,” she shares. The story’s historical context adds another layer of significance, particularly for Lewis, who sees the character’s aspirations as a reflection of the struggles faced by people of colour throughout history. “For many, being a citizen was a simple thing, but for people of colour who lacked that privilege, it became a monumental dream,” she notes.
Since making her Broadway debut less than two years ago in the revival of *The Wiz*, Lewis has experienced remarkable growth as a performer. Working alongside a hugely talented cast, including the likes of Joshua Henry and Caissie Levy, she understands the importance of storytelling through theatre. “It’s taught me so much about my artistry, creativity, and the power we all have on stage to inspire,” she reflects.
As Lewis prepares for the upcoming Tony Awards, she expresses gratitude for the opportunity to share Sarah’s story with audiences. The revival of *Ragtime*, directed by Lear deBessonet, has been nominated for 11 Tony Awards this year, including Best Revival of a Musical. The original production was a critical success, receiving 13 nominations and winning four.
The musical’s themes resonate deeply in today’s world, and Lewis believes that theatre holds the capacity to effect change. “I truly believe theatre can change the world. It moves and impacts people on a daily basis,” she asserts. This belief fuels her passion, making the art form not just a profession, but a calling.
As the countdown to the Tony Awards continues, Lewis remains focused on her craft, drawing strength from both her character and the legacy of artists who paved the way, like McDonald. “Being on that stage, I feel impacted and inspired every day,” she concludes.
The revival of *Ragtime* is currently playing at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, and fans eagerly await the 2026 Tony Awards hosted by Pink at Radio City Music Hall. With broadcasts planned for both coasts, the stage is set for a night of celebration for the Broadway community and its many talented performers.
