The detonation occurred beneath a residence situated in Biak Numfor Regency, located in Papua Province. Local authorities, as reported by The Jakarta Globe and Antara, confirmed that at least five individuals were killed in the blast, while another five people have required hospital treatment due to injuries sustained. Additionally, three individuals remain unaccounted for.

According to reports, the explosion originated from a stilt house located near the shore on Walter Mongonsidi Street in Biak Town. The local police believe the explosive device had been left behind from World War II, a relic of the turbulent past that now poses a threat to contemporary life.
Papua Police Chief Commissioner Cahyo Sukarnito confirmed the nature of the explosive during discussions with the press, asserting that the event was indeed linked to a historic bomb from the wartime period. His perspective was echoed by Biak Numfor Police Chief Ari Trestiawan, who has also been actively involved in the investigation.
CCTV footage has captured the dramatic moment of the blast, revealing flames and smoke billowing above the skyline of Biak Numfor Regency shortly after the explosion erupted. This video, shared by various outlets including Antara and Kompas, illustrates the considerable destruction that ensued, with reports indicating that multiple structures were devastated by the force of the explosion.
In total, six houses in close proximity to the blast site were reportedly completely destroyed. However, the true extent of the damage appears to be ongoing, as assessments are still being conducted to ascertain the full impact of the explosion on the area.
On the evening of the incident, emergency responders evacuated local residents to ensure their safety and secured the area to prevent further casualties. Despite these efforts, the search continues for the three missing persons, with local authorities remaining vigilant around the blast site.
Biak Numfor Police Chief Trestiawan conveyed that officials are maintaining a presence at the scene to monitor activity and provide updates. He mentioned that the casualty figures and injury counts are still being compiled as the investigation unfolds. “There are casualties, but we are still gathering data,” he said, indicating that additional information will be shared as it becomes available.
The ongoing search operation reflects concerns for the safety of the community and the need to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. Authorities are expected to resume their efforts on June 1, determined to find the missing individuals and address the devastation caused by this historical remnant of war.
In light of this tragedy, local officials will continue to provide updates as more information is gathered, emphasising the importance of community safety and thorough investigation in the aftermath of such destructive occurrences. The incident serves as a reminder of the lingering effects of past conflicts, as well as the need for vigilance in areas where historical explosives may still pose a risk.
