Sydney Towle, a 23-year-old influencer, has faced a daunting challenge in her young life after being diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of bile duct cancer. As she continues her fight against this aggressive illness, Towle’s journey has taken an unexpected turn, leading to poignant reflections about family support and the path ahead.

Recently, Towle made headlines as she prepared to take the runway at Miami Swim Week. Ahead of her appearance in The Chemo Club x Post Swim runway show, she sat down for an interview with PEOPLE. During the conversation, she opened up about the heart-wrenching moment when her doctor suggested that she consider transitioning to end-of-life care. This recommendation came as a shock, shared in a series of candid TikTok videos that have since resonated with her audience of one million followers.
In the videos, Towle recounted her initial disbelief upon learning that her cancer specialist wanted her to switch to palliative care. “We had never been told that this was the path that we were heading toward,” she explained. With her mind focused on her ongoing clinical trial involving tumour-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy, she and her mother, Elizabeth Morrow, were not prepared for such drastic news.
Towle’s emotional response to this suggestion highlighted her determination not to accept a cease in treatment. “To hear there is no treatment plan was incredibly alarming,” she remarked. The gravity of the situation struck hard, prompting tears from both her and her mother. However, Towle quickly asserted her resolve, stating, “That’s not the path that I’m on right now.” She stressed the importance of exploring all available treatment options before making any decisions regarding her care.
Addressing her mother’s reaction, Towle acknowledged the difficulty of absorbing such dire news. Morrow echoed her daughter’s sentiments, sharing that neither of them was prepared for the idea of end-of-life care, particularly when there remained other potential treatments on the table. “It’s not something that either of us, or a lot of other people, are emotionally ready for,” she shared.
Throughout their ordeal, Towle has taken on the role of a support system for her mother, often putting on a brave face to ease Morrow’s fears. “It’s very tough for me because I want to be the strong one,” she explained. Both women have rallied to support each other, with Towle describing her mother as an inspirational figure who has always emphasised resilience.
Ultimately, Towle made the poignant decision to seek a second opinion from a different oncologist. This change proved beneficial, as her new doctor cleared her to travel to Miami for the much-anticipated Swim Week event. It was a moment that represented not just a modelling opportunity, but a step toward embracing life amid a difficult health journey.
Reflecting on the preparation for the event, Towle shared how close she came to remaining in the hospital longer. “I was in the hospital just days before, and there was talk about keeping me for a few more days.” Fortunately, her medical team supported her desire to attend Miami Swim Week. “Being outside and in the sunshine would probably be good for you,” they reassured her, inspiring her determination to participate.
Towle’s runway experience was not just about fashion; it also aimed to boost visibility for those undergoing cancer treatment. Alongside three other models who were either currently in therapy or had recently completed their journey, Towle modelled for Post Swim, a brand dedicated to creating swimwear for those post-cancer. This collaboration underscores the importance of representation and empowerment for individuals navigating challenges related to their bodies and health.
As she walks the runway, Sydney Towle continues to inspire countless others who may face similar struggles. Her story is one of hope, resilience, and the enduring bond between a mother and daughter navigating the complexities of illness together. With the support of her loved ones and an unwavering spirit, Towle demonstrates that while cancer may bring challenges, it cannot extinguish the light of hope and determination.
