Cecily Wilborn, the Southern soul sensation, has unveiled her latest album, ‘Soul Therapy’, reflecting her arduous journey through personal struggles and triumphs. The Arkansas native’s new work is garnering attention not just for its sound but for its deeply personal narrative, combining elements of R&B, country, and Southern soul.
In the opening track, a poignant spoken-word piece, Wilborn reveals to her listeners the challenges she has faced in recent years. The singer-songwriter’s life was marked by a tumultuous divorce, academic setbacks, job loss, and personal tragedies, all while she raised her four children. However, overcoming these obstacles has infused her music with a profound sense of resilience. “People see me and they think I’m just excited because I’m dropping an album with [record label] Blackground 2.0. But I’m really excited because I know how hard I fought,” she shared in an interview.

Wilborn’s journey is more than just a musical pursuit; it is a testament to perseverance. Throughout her life, she faced numerous doubts from those around her, many insisting that her role as a mother and concerns about her age would hinder her music career. “I showed them it would,” she asserts, emphasising her determination to succeed against the odds.
Growing up in Arkansas, Wilborn attributes much of her passion for music to her parents, especially her father, who serves as a pastor. Their influence ensured that she was not sheltered from the world, igniting a diverse musical sensibility that has become her signature sound. “Nobody knows what my sound is,” she mused, “they’re like, ‘You sound like everything.’”
Cecily’s formal education in music production at Full Sail University laid the groundwork for her artistic expression. In 2023, her track “Southern Man,” a heartfelt tribute to her husband, became a viral sensation on TikTok, marking a significant milestone in her unfolding career. ‘Soul Therapy’ builds on this foundation, featuring production contributions from several notable producers, including Eric and Curtis Hudson and Sean Garrett.
In the album, Wilborn takes an intimate approach, speaking directly to her fan base in the opening track. This decision was purposeful; she wanted to create a connection with her listeners. “I didn’t want them to feel like I was talking to everybody, because my music is not for everybody,” she clarified, recognising the varied experiences her audience may bring.
Much of her songwriting stems from both personal experiences and those of her close friends. “They’ll literally get into stuff and be like, ‘This is what you need to be writing about,'” she explained. Wilborn aims to represent the everyday struggles of those who lead typical lives, highlighting the importance of dialogue around personal challenges.
A significant aspect of ‘Soul Therapy’ is Wilborn’s journey into therapy, which plays a crucial role in the album’s narrative. Navigating the complexities of familial dynamics, particularly as her father is also her pastor, has been a daunting task. “Being vulnerable is a very scary thing,” she reflected, acknowledging the personal difficulties that accompany opening up about her emotions.
The fabric of Wilborn’s songwriting is woven with inspiration that strikes from various sources, including dreams. One of her tracks, “Hope,” came to her after a restless night’s sleep filled with troubling thoughts. “I woke up that morning with a lot to say,” she recounted, illustrating her unique creative process.
Among the highlights of the album is the collaboration with Cupid on the track “Feeling Lucky.” Wilborn fondly reminisced about introducing her family to Cupid’s hit, the “Cupid Shuffle,” showcasing the joy music brings across generations. Her genuine admiration for Cupid was evident as she described how he inspired her and generously offered advice throughout their collaboration.
Reflecting on her relationship, Wilborn shared that the song “I Need Your Love” stems from her experiences over nearly a decade of marriage to her husband. “Regardless of what we go through, I ain’t giving up on this,” she affirmed, capturing the essence of commitment and resilience in relationships.
Looking ahead, Wilborn is already brimming with new material, expressing her eagerness to continue writing and creating. “I got another album ready to go. I never stop because you never know when the music is going to be needed,” she stated, indicating that her creative journey is just beginning.
As ‘Soul Therapy’ resonates with audiences, Wilborn proves that vulnerability can be a powerful tool for healing and connection, and her story is an inspiring reminder that perseverance and authenticity can lead to transformative experiences both personally and artistically.
