The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) confirmed that Lumpkin succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the crash. Reports indicate that she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and was partially ejected from her vehicle. Her passing has left friends, family, and colleagues in mourning, particularly as she had recently completed her first year of teaching at Alford Elementary School.

Lumpkin had recently graduated from Kennesaw State University’s Bagwell College of Education in May 2022, earning a degree in Elementary Education with Cum Laude honours. Her dedication to education and community service was evident throughout her academic career. Kendalyn McBride, a friend and fellow student, launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Lumpkin’s family, highlighting her significant contributions both inside and outside the classroom.
“Chelsea has done it all with grace,” McBride wrote on the fundraising page. “Her roles included serving as a Student Government Association Senator, Executive Director of Diversity & Inclusion, and various leadership positions in other campus organisations.” Her efforts to foster a sense of community and support for her peers during her time at university made a lasting impact.
In her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Lumpkin held positions such as Vice President and Chaplain, earning respect and admiration from her peers. McBride’s tribute to Lumpkin noted that her kindness, humour, and uplifting spirit would be greatly missed in the community and beyond.
As news of Lumpkin’s death spread, Kennesaw State University’s National Pan-Hellenic Council took to social media to honour her memory. The council expressed how Lumpkin’s radiant personality had the power to light up a room and how deeply her absence would be felt. “She was someone who lit up the room with her smile, presence, and attitude,” the council shared in an emotional post.
In a show of solidarity and remembrance, a balloon release was organised for the evening of May 28 at Swift Cantrell Park in Kennesaw. This event provided a moment for the community to come together, reflect on Lumpkin’s life, and celebrate the joy she brought to those around her.
As of May 28, the fundraising initiative set up in Lumpkin’s name had surpassed $9,700, illustrating the profound effect she had on those in her life. The contributions not only serve as a testament to her memory but also provide crucial support for her family during this difficult time.
In the wake of such sorrow, Alford Elementary School and other institutions connected to Lumpkin have faced the difficult task of honouring her legacy while supporting their students and staff. The response from friends and colleagues indicates the strong community ties and affection held for Lumpkin, who had already made a notable impact in her first year as a teacher.
As her family and friends navigate this devastating loss, the legacy of Chelsea Lumpkin—a passionate educator and beloved member of her community—will undoubtedly endure. The heartfelt tributes and ongoing support reflect not only the love for a cherished individual but also a commitment to nurturing the values they shared.
