Abby Narishkin experienced a whirlwind of emotions on her honeymoon after her husband misplaced his wedding ring while searching for shells in the ocean. The couple had been enjoying their time in Antigua when the gold band slipped from his finger, leading to a frantic but ultimately successful recovery effort.
Writing for *Business Insider*, Narishkin shared the details of the incident that turned their relaxing getaway into a frantic treasure hunt. As the couple splashed about in the water, her husband’s 14-karat gold ring, which they had purchased from Costco for £1,000, unexpectedly slipped off into the ocean. Initially, Narishkin remained surprisingly composed even as her husband panicked over the loss. Given that her own ring was a cherished family heirloom, she admitted that she would rather lose his than hers.

The newlyweds tried their best to locate the missing ring. Armed with snorkels, they spent a frustrating hour combing through the same stretch of ocean floor in a bid to recover the ring. Alas, their efforts proved fruitless.
That evening, while reviewing photographs from their day, the couple made a realisation that would change everything: they had been searching in the wrong location altogether. The ring had actually been lost at a different beach. With renewed determination, Narishkin turned to the internet for guidance and stumbled upon several recommendations on Reddit that suggested employing a metal detector to help recover lost items. After initially facing some negativity when seeking help in a Facebook group for tourists, someone pointed her toward Winston Merchant, a local metal detector enthusiast.

Merchant, who has reportedly located around 1,000 pieces of jewellery, agreed to assist Narishkin during a conversation on WhatsApp. He established a fee structure of £40 if he failed to find the ring, but charged £160 if he was successful.
The following morning, after 44 long hours of worry, Narishkin met Merchant at the beach, accompanied by his metal detector. Merchant, who also engages in farming marijuana and black pineapples to support his metal-detecting hobby, arrived equipped with his £640 Garrett Sea Hunter Mark II detector.
Before beginning his search for the ring, Merchant scanned Narishkin’s own wedding ring to ensure that he was operating on the correct frequency for detecting gold. Wading into the ocean until the water reached his neck, he methodically searched the area, determined to find the lost item.
After approximately an hour and a half of searching, Merchant struck gold—he located the wedding ring. Overjoyed, Narishkin ran up the beach, grasping a shell in one hand while concealing the ring in the other. Approaching her husband with a grin, she pretended to have found only a shell before revealing the precious gold band. The moment left her husband beaming with relief and happiness.
Merchant shared that he boasts a commendable success rate of approximately 95%. When his metal detector fails to locate a lost item, he often resorts to searching manually. “It’s not just a ring. A lot of memories flash through your head when you lose it,” he explained to Narishkin. “That joy from your vacation gets pushed back, and you leave bitter. I make somebody happy again.”
This remarkable recovery not only restored the couple’s happiness but also underscored the spirit of community and the lengths to which individuals will go to assist each other in times of distress. The success of the recovery serves as a reminder of both the vulnerability we face when possessions go missing and the potential for goodwill among strangers.
The couple returned to their honeymoon, the lost ring and the tale of its recovery imbuing their vacation with a new sense of adventure and gratitude.
