Twin sisters Krystal and Kristian Huizar have embarked on a heartfelt journey from their beginnings as premature infants to becoming nurses in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Las Palmas Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. Born at just 32 weeks due to delicate circumstances surrounding their mother’s labour, the twins spent the initial two months of their lives in the NICU. During that time, their mother was a constant presence, spending nights by their side and demonstrating what it means to be a devoted parent. Reflecting on that period, Krystal recalled, “She said that she would be there every day, spend the night there, do everything.”
The experiences they had as babies in the NICU left a lasting impression on Krystal and Kristian. Growing up, the sisters often reminisced about the extraordinary care provided by the nurses and the medical staff who supported their family through an exceptionally difficult time in their lives. This admiration played a crucial role in their decision to pursue careers in nursing.

Krystal articulated her motivation, saying, “I wanted to be able to do the same with the parents and the babies.” Today, both sisters fulfil this dream by working alongside one another in the same unit that nurtured them in their infancy. Their unique perspective as former NICU patients allows them to forge deeper connections with the families they now assist.
Their role as nurses goes beyond mere medical duties; it involves providing emotional support to parents navigating the uncertainties of having a newborn in intensive care. “We can relate more to the parents because we know what our family went through,” explained Krystal. Kristian echoed her sister’s sentiment, emphasising that their journey encourages parents by serving as a testament to what is possible. “We remind them that we were in the NICU as well, and now we’re nurses. That gives them hope,” she said.
Laughter is also an integral part of their work. Their close resemblance sometimes leads to amusing confusion among parents in the NICU. “They’re like, ‘Were you here this morning?’” Kristian recounted with a smile. “I’m like, ‘No, I just started my shift.’” Such light-hearted moments not only uplift their spirits but also contribute positively to the overall atmosphere in a challenging environment.
Despite the demanding nature of their shifts, which often require them to work at different times of the day, the twins have forged an even tighter bond. They attribute this strengthened connection to their shared experiences in the NICU, which has given them a unique understanding of each other and the families they serve. “It created a bond that made our relationship stronger,” Kristian noted. “It’s a great opportunity to celebrate not only our journey, but to help support other families too.”
The Huizar twins serve as an inspiring example of how personal experiences can shape professional paths and bring comfort to others. Their commitment to their roles in the NICU reflects their hope to provide reassurance and support to parents who may be feeling overwhelmed. In doing so, they honour their past while helping others navigate their own journeys.
Their story resonates not only within their community but showcases the powerful impact of empathy and understanding in healthcare. As they continue to work together, Krystal and Kristian Huizar embody the spirit of compassion and resilience, proving that from the uncertainty of their own beginnings, they have emerged as beacons of hope for others facing similar struggles.
