A 22-year-old woman from California is facing a challenging recovery after sustaining life-altering injuries when a tree branch fell on her during a fierce windstorm. Jasmine Mayer, from Santa Rosa, was knitting with a friend when the tragic incident occurred on Sunday, 17 May, leaving her with a severe spinal cord injury and paralysis.

Her father, Andy Mayer, described the injuries as “catastrophic.” In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, he recounted that Jasmine was happily engaged in conversation when the large branch broke free and struck them. “It’s just an unimaginable incident,” he remarked, conveying a deep sense of disbelief over what happened.

Emergency services responded quickly, arriving on the scene to provide immediate medical assistance before transporting Jasmine to UC Davis Medical Center for further treatment. According to information on a GoFundMe page established to assist her family, the young woman suffered fractured vertebrae, internal bleeding, broken and bruised ribs, and was subsequently found to have developed a blood clot.

Despite the severity of her condition, there is a glimmer of hope for recovery. The GoFundMe page, which has gathered over £35,000 in donations as of the end of May, indicates that while Jasmine is currently paralysed from the waist down, she is beginning to regain some sensation in her legs and feet. The fundraiser aims to cover medical expenses that health insurance may not fully address. It will also facilitate the acquisition of necessary equipment and an accessible vehicle for Jasmine’s long-term care.
Her father expressed optimism about her recovery, noting that while doctors have confirmed the spinal cord is not completely severed, Jasmine is now embarking on a long road to rehabilitation. “Time will tell,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to standing by his daughter during this arduous process. “She’s hopeful, and she’s going to work hard on her recovery.”
While reflecting on Jasmine’s resilience, Andy described her as a remarkably strong and positive individual. “She’s been kind to everyone through the pain,” he said, highlighting her unwavering spirit even in the face of such daunting challenges.
The accident has resonated deeply within the local community, with many expressing their support. Lauren Kelleher, a close friend of Jasmine’s and the organizer of the GoFundMe initiative, reported how moved her family was by the outpouring of generosity. “It is impossible to find the words to describe how thankful and moved we are by the incredible show of community,” she wrote in an update on the page.
On the same day as Jasmine’s accident, another tragedy struck in Santa Rosa. A 61-year-old man lost his life after being hit by a falling tree branch, emphasizing the severity of the windstorm that swept through the region. Local authorities reported receiving over 15 calls related to hazardous weather, which included incidents of fallen power lines, downed trees, and disruptions caused by the wind.
Jasmine’s story underscores the unpredictable nature of such weather events, as well as the profound impact they can have on local families and communities. As Jasmine continues to battle through her injuries, her family’s resilience and the support of their community will be crucial in helping her navigate this new chapter of her life.
As her journey progresses, updates on her recovery and ongoing medical needs are expected to be shared through the GoFundMe page, allowing supporters to stay connected with Jasmine’s path to healing.
