According to the Chicago Police Department, the incident transpired around 6:42 p.m. in the East Garfield Park neighbourhood, specifically at the intersection of West Lake Street and Homan Avenue. Preliminary investigations reveal that the driver of the sedan allegedly ran a red light, colliding with a southbound bus. This initial collision prompted the CTA bus to subsequently strike another bus travelling northbound on Homan Avenue.

As a result of the crash, nine people sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention. The fire department confirmed that those injured included both bus drivers and several passengers. The driver of the Subaru was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition. However, the driver of the second bus was in a critical condition, also taken to Stroger Hospital for urgent care.
The incident has drawn attention not only due to its severity but also due to the actions of the male driver of the sedan, whose age remains unconfirmed. Police have issued multiple citations against him as an investigation into the crash continues. A statement from authorities indicated that the sedan’s driver disregarded traffic signals, putting the safety of numerous individuals at risk.
Initial responses from witnesses reflect a rising concern regarding road safety in the area. One passenger, identified only as Guy, was aboard the southbound bus during the incident. He spoke of his injury, which involved a hurt knee, and expressed frustration over the recklessness displayed by certain drivers. He stated, “It is dangerous, man, people should not be driving. You’ve got to take into consideration other people, you know, people are driving like it’s a game.”
Images from the scene demonstrate the extent of the collision, with the Subaru appearing heavily damaged, its door crumpled and the front end destroyed. The CTA buses similarly exhibited damage, with one bus bearing a completely shattered front windshield and significant debris spread across the roadside.
In light of the ongoing investigation, the Chicago Transit Authority released a statement indicating that initial reports suggest the collision began when the Sedan hit a southbound #82 CTA bus. This underscores the broader implications of traffic safety regulations and compliance in busy urban areas.
Moving forward, the police and local authorities are likely to review traffic flow and signal enforcement in this region to prevent further incidents of this nature. The crash serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic rules and the potential consequences of negligent driving.
Following the incident, the Chicago Fire Department and the CTA have been approached for further comments regarding the ongoing investigation and any additional safety measures that may be implemented.
