Two young children, 22-month-old Will Richman and 10-month-old Wesley Richman, have been located safely in Mexico following a distressing situation that prompted an AMBER alert. Their mother, Lizzie Tomich, reported them missing after she lost contact with their father, 46-year-old Dane Richman. The alarm bells were raised when Dane stopped responding to messages and failed to appear for a legal deposition in Utah.

The initial report of the missing children was made by Tomich on Saturday, May 23, after she had last seen them in Shelton, Washington, with their father, who was later identified as a suspect in the case. An AMBER alert issued by the Utah Department of Public Safety warned that the children were in significant danger due to Dane Richman’s unstable mental state, characterised by severe depression.

Officials confirmed that the boys were found in San Felipe, a city in northwestern Mexico, on Tuesday, May 26. The recovery of Will and Wesley came as a relief to their family and the broader community, who had been on high alert during the search process, which involved various law enforcement agencies.
Tomich’s worries escalated when Dane failed to respond to her calls and messages. Reports indicate that she requested a welfare check, which revealed that his residence was vacant, prompting further concerns. “When we learned this, we knew something was wrong,” Tomich recounted during an interview, reflecting on the alarming situation.
In a twist during the ordeal, Dane reportedly responded to enquiries from Tomich claiming he had taken the boys camping. It has not been disclosed exactly when this message was sent, but investigators believe that Dane may have been near San Diego and had already crossed the U.S.-Mexico border at that point.
After the boys’ safe return, Tomich’s family expressed immense relief and gratitude. Jenny Hirsch Tomich, a relative, shared her emotional response on social media, stating, “We will appreciate every day from this day forward. I have never experienced true terror with my family before this.” She praised Lizzie for her bravery throughout the distressing experience and highlighted the family’s eagerness to reunite and celebrate the return of the children.
The motive behind Dane Richman’s actions remains unclear, although police noted his emotional distress prior to the incident. Reports indicated that he had sold his belongings and abandoned his home before allegedly taking the boys.
Dane Richman has since been arrested on charges of custodial interference as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the children’s disappearance. It is unknown whether he has publicly contested the charges or engaged legal representation at this time.
The harrowing case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by families in difficult circumstances, and it spotlights the critical role of effective communication and collaboration between law enforcement and the community in urgent situations. The swift recovery of Will and Wesley Richman brings a glimmer of hope amidst what has been an alarming episode for their family and friends.
As this case unfolds, many will be watching closely to see how the legal proceedings develop and what support can be offered to the Richman family as they begin to heal from this traumatic experience.
