Katherine Legge, the British racing star, has revealed her motivation for seeking out thrilling challenges within the motorsport world, as she prepares to take on one of the most ambitious feats of her career: attempting to compete in both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. This historic endeavour is set for May 24, where Legge aspires to make history as the first woman to undertake this extraordinary challenge, joining an exclusive group of only six individuals who have achieved such a feat.

As she readies herself for this monumental task, Legge expressed her enthusiasm at a recent celebration hosted by PEOPLE and e.l.f. Cosmetics. The sponsorship from e.l.f. Cosmetics has proven significant not only in supporting her racing career but also in championing the cause of representation for women in motorsports.

Reflecting on her lifelong passion for racing, Legge shared with PEOPLE her childhood fixation on adrenaline and adventure. “As a child, I was always seeking out the next thrill and the rush of excitement,” she explained, underscoring how her early interests paved the way for her journey in racing. Her love affair with motorsport began with go-karting, a realm where competition, speed, and personal challenges intertwined. “I feel incredibly fortunate to have found something I am deeply passionate about,” she added, emphasising the importance of pursuing one’s passions in life.

Legge’s career path took a pivotal turn when she ventured to the British offices of Cosworth, Ford’s performance division, during a time when she sought prospects in North America. Although she initially intended to meet IndyCar executive Kevin Kalkhoven, fate intervened, and she ended up interacting with Kalkhoven’s wife and daughter. This moment proved significant when Kalkhoven’s wife later attended the Indianapolis event to support Legge. “It’s a full circle moment,” she reflected, recalling the connection to her early ambitions 20 years ago.
With years spent racing at the top level of her sport, Legge also addressed the increasing visibility of women in motorsports, a topic she feels strongly about. “It genuinely feels like they’ve changed the face of racing,” Legge stated regarding her work with e.l.f. Cosmetics. She believes that greater representation enables women to envision themselves in diverse roles across various fields. “You can be anything you want to be if you put your mind to it,” she asserted, encouraging young women to consider careers beyond just racing, from engineering to other sectors.
As she approached the monumental challenge of attempting “The Double,” Legge recognised the intense physical and logistical demands of competing in two high-profile races in a single day. “Even completing one race is a huge achievement,” she pointed out, adding, “The prospect of tackling two on the same day is fairly daunting, to be honest. But it’s exciting all the same.”
Despite the pressures of the weekend, Legge maintained an upbeat attitude, ready to embrace whatever obstacles came her way. “You’ve got to let it go when things don’t go as planned,” she advised. “Things will inevitably go awry, but being grumpy won’t help. It’s crucial to go with the flow and enjoy the experience.”
While the results of her ambitious attempt remain uncertain, Legge’s spirit and determination continue to inspire both fans and fellow racers alike. Her efforts not only shine a spotlight on the challenges women face in motorsports but also demonstrate the importance of pursuing one’s dreams, no matter the hurdles along the way.
As she embarks on this historical journey at the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600, Katherine Legge stands as a testament to the power of passion and perseverance, embodying a new era for women in motorsports.
