Former President Donald Trump has faced a wave of mockery from late-night host Jimmy Kimmel following his decision to skip his eldest son Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding to Bettina Anderson over the weekend. This event took place on a private island in the Bahamas, but the former president claimed he could not attend due to “circumstances pertaining to Government” and an unwavering “love for the United States of America.”

In his opening monologue on Tuesday, Kimmel took to task Trump’s announcement made via his social media platform, Truth Social. “Daddy Donald sent his RSVP via Truth Social,” Kimmel joked, highlighting the unusual method of communication. He continued to lampoon Trump, suggesting that while the former president professes love for his son, he clearly prioritises his country ahead of family.

Prior to the wedding, Trump acknowledged to reporters that the timing was not ideal for him to attend, despite understanding that his son would likely have preferred his presence. Ultimately, he opted to remain in the United States while addressing pressing concerns, further attracting scrutiny for his decision.
Kimmel’s barbs extended beyond Trump’s absence. The host mischievously referred to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, with whom Trump had past associations. “Flying to a private island makes him miss his friend Jeffrey, who he lost,” Kimmel quipped, alluding to Epstein’s controversial history and his eventual death in a New York jail in 2019. Trump has consistently denied any knowledge of Epstein’s criminal behaviour and has stated their friendship ended years prior to Epstein’s legal troubles.
Throughout the monologue, Kimmel did acknowledge Trump’s insights on marriage during his remarks about his son’s new relationship. He remarked, “But he did say that Don and Bettina are going to have a great marriage,” seemingly aware of the irony, given Trump’s own history of multiple marriages.
The late-night comedian painted a humorous picture of the wedding festivities without Trump senior, noting, “Poor Don Jr., without his father. You know, they had to scramble to find somebody else to make a 90-minute toast about windmills and transgender weightlifters,” referencing Trump’s penchant for discussing these unusual topics in various contexts.
Kimmel’s criticisms come at a time when Trump has made clear his disdain for the comedian’s work. Following comedian Stephen Colbert’s departure from late-night television, Trump issued a thinly veiled warning to others in the industry, including Kimmel. The former president has previously attempted to pressure broadcasters regarding Kimmel, accusing him of being “seriously unfunny” and demanding his dismissal from ABC.
The contention between the two has escalated over the years, with Trump’s allies having sought to hold Kimmel accountable for his jokes that they deemed inappropriate. In the wake of a serious incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner earlier this year, Trump and First Lady Melania Trump called for ABC to address Kimmel’s comments under the prevailing climate of growing concern over safety at public events.
On the night that Colbert’s last episode aired, Trump tweeted late into the night, criticising Colbert’s talent and hinting that Kimmel could be next on his cancellation list. Shortly after Colbert’s show was scrapped, the former president took to social media to express his delight, asserting that Kimmel’s talent was even lesser than his predecessor’s.
Despite the surrounding drama, Kimmel’s timing and content of jokes about Trump’s absence from the wedding chain remain a staple of his late-night programme. In the same week, he also addressed Trump’s recent medical examination at the Walter Reed Military Medical Centre, poking fun at the president’s insistence that all was well regarding his health.
As the tension between Trump and entertainers like Kimmel continues to unfold, both parties are likely to remain in the public eye, each strategically utilizing humour and criticism. With Trump’s ongoing involvement in political discourse and Kimmel’s comedic jabs, audiences can expect further developments in this enduring rivalry.
