An 11-year-old boy has tragically lost his life after being swept out to sea while playing at Surfside Beach in Texas. The incident occurred on 24 May, during which time the child, identified as Joshua Lahai, was enjoying a day at the beach with members of his youth football team.
According to reports, Joshua was struck by a large wave whilst playing on a sandbar around 5:30 p.m. local time. Moments later, he was swept into deeper waters. On 26 May, police confirmed that Joshua’s body was discovered approximately 150 yards from the shore after a fisherman reported feeling something brush against his leg while wade fishing.

Surfside Beach Police Chief Phillip Hester addressed the media, confirming the recovery of the young boy’s body and expressing the sorrow surrounding the tragic event. “Although it was a tragic day, at least he’s home,” Hester stated, referring to the closure brought to Joshua’s grieving family by his return.
Officer Christopher Redmond was patrolling Beach Drive when he learned from fishermen about the incident. He waded into the water and found Joshua’s body floating. The boy’s remains were eventually brought back to shore in the 300 block of Beach Drive. Officer Redmond noted that while it was a challenging task, his primary focus was to retrieve the body to provide closure for the family.
Police provided additional context regarding the events leading to Joshua’s disappearance. A witness indicated that he and other children experienced a sudden lift from the wave, leading to a sense of panic when they realised they could no longer touch the ground. It was during this distressing moment that Joshua was subsequently submerged beneath the waves.
Search teams initiated their efforts shortly after the incident was reported, leading to the finding of the boy’s clothing about 24 hours later. Joshua was an active participant in the Southwest Broncos, part of the Fort Bend Youth Football League, which has expressed its condolences and support for the family during this difficult time. The league stated, “In times like these, the little league football community comes together as one family. We stand with the Southwest Broncos during this difficult time.”
In light of this tragedy, Chief Hester has shared essential safety advice for families, underscoring the need for constant supervision of children while swimming. He highlighted the perilous nature of the Gulf of Mexico, advising that flotation devices should be considered essential for young swimmers. Hester commented, “This is the Gulf of Mexico, and it’s unforgiving,” urging families to set limitations on how far children should venture into the water.
The news of this incident has left the local community in mourning, with families reflecting on the importance of beach safety, especially during the busy summer season. The loss of a young life serves as a harsh reminder for all beachgoers about the unpredictable and often treacherous marine environment.
Joshua’s family has been notified of the incident, and they, along with the community, now face the difficult task of coping with such an unimaginable loss. As local authorities investigate the incident, citizens are rallying to provide support and solidarity to the affected family, underscoring the tight-knit nature of the community.
As memorial gatherings and tributes begin to take shape in the coming days, those who knew Joshua will undoubtedly remember him as a vibrant and spirited child, whose life was sadly cut short by a sudden tragedy. The entire community is left to ponder the implications of this heartbreaking event and reinforce the importance of safety and vigilance during recreational activities at the beach.
