Drake University has bid farewell to its beloved live mascot, Griff II, during a heartwarming graduation ceremony that took place on May 24. The English bulldog, who has served as the university’s live mascot since July 2020, was celebrated for his contributions to the campus community and the wider Des Moines area.

To commemorate his retirement, Griff II donned a blue graduation gown, complete with a matching cap, on the university’s stage. As Erin Bell, director of the Live Mascot Program, placed the cap on his head, university president Marty Martin ceremoniously moved the tassel from one side to the other, symbolising the end of an important chapter for the much-loved canine.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Drake University expressed its gratitude to Griff II, stating, “You brought energy, comfort, and a sense of home to so many Bulldogs. Retirement looks good on you, legend.” The university acknowledged his role not just beloved mascot but also as a certified therapy dog, leveraging his position to engage in charitable efforts and promote literacy in the community.
Throughout his tenure, Griff II was a prominent figure who reached out to more than 70 elementary school classrooms in the Des Moines Public School district. His “Halloween Story Time” initiative saw him making numerous visits to encourage young readers, further cementing his legacy as a champion for literacy among children. In this role, he was affectionately dubbed “Des Moines’ hometown dog,” highlighting his strong connection with local residents.

Described as an “outgoing, silly, and smart” English bulldog, Griff III is ready to carry on the legacy of his predecessor, filling the “big pawprints” left by Griff II. The new mascot was selected to take over the role on May 8, 2026, and is expected to bring his own zest and enthusiasm to the university.
